US, Mexico discussing new immigration deal to avert tariffs

U.S. and Mexican officials are discussing an agreement that would ramp up Mexico’s immigration enforcement effort and allow the U.S. to deport asylum seekers as both sides work to clinch a deal that will avert tariffs on Mexican products, according to an administration official.

It’s not clear if President Trump, who is traveling in Europe, or Mexican leaders would accept the terms of such an agreement.

Delegations from both countries held staff-level talks in Washington on Thursday, one day after a meeting convened by Vice President Mike Pence did not result in a deal to avert sweeping tariffs on Mexican goods Trump has threatened to impose by Monday.

Under the deal, Mexico and Guatemala would agree to take asylum seekers from Central America, who would be swiftly deported from the United States, rather than await their asylum cases in the country.

Mexico would take Guatemalan asylum seekers, and Guatemala would take Salvadorans and Hondurans, according to the report.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan, one of the principals in this week's discussions, was in Guatemala late last month and signed a migration cooperation agreement with that country's authorities.

“Bet there’re just doing lip service to buy time and do nothing like Iran does.”

No doubt. As do N Korea and many other countries.

Mexicans can already be auto-deported. It’s the countries not on American border that can claim amnesty.

Its time to do what President Eisenhower did in the early 1950’s to curb the illegal alien problem:

Arrest a minimum of 100,000 illegals and don’t release them at the border - put them on ships and send them back to Veracruz. Confiscate ALL of their US held assets - financial accounts, cars, homes, ALL PROPERTY. Within a year, millions more illegals will self-deport.

It worked in the 1950’s and would go a LONG way to solve the illegal alien problem again today.

While raising import tariffs may give Mexico second thoughts about its immigration policies this policy would halt the invasion. It’s called resciprocity.

In the hundreds of postings here in Free Republic rarely is this brought up. It’s Known As Reciprocity. We should be treating anybody illegally crossing the Mexican border into the US the way the Mexican’s do;

Any American illegally .crossing into Mexico. Before being kicked out can get a heavy fine and possible imprisonment.

Corporate crony tax Dodgers will never allow that.
Imagine the taxes they would have to pay of they hired your kids or grankids.
Our own government has an overabundance of H1b visa holders for that very same reason... well in addition to retaining permanent political power.

I feel a little for the Mexican government. The ones who normally they must answer to demand more illegal voters be brought across the border, and now someone is making it financially difficult to continue to please the Swamp.

Of course they see it, that is why they oppose it, they know it will work in stopping the cheap labor for their cronies.

Nonsense! Everyone knows tariffs never work! /sarc

In the real world the fledgling United States utilized tariffs of foreign imports to entirely fund the entire federal budget from 1789 until the Revenue Act of 1913. During that 124 year period America went from an agricultural and resource extraction economy to become the foremost industrial superpower.

Anyone who says tariffs don't work is a lying liar or an ignorant fool. President Wilson was the odious communist that switched America from relying on tariffs to relying on the "progressive" income tax to fund the federal government.

The Revenue Act of 1913, also known as the Underwood Tariff or the Underwood-Simmons Act (ch. 16, 38 Stat. 114), re-established a federal income tax in the United States and substantially lowered tariff rates. The act was sponsored by Representative Oscar Underwood, passed by the 63rd United States Congress, and signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson."

Both Grover the loser Nordquist and a gal from The Heritage Fountation nixed the tariffs as “a bad idea, economically”, on FoxNiz, a little while ago.

Unreal for Heritage to not get it.
