Senate Republicans Warn White House Against Mexico Tariffs
NYT ^ | 6/4/2019 | Catie Edmondson and Maggie Haberman

Posted on 06/04/2019 1:52:31 PM PDT by semimojo

Republican senators sent the White House a sharp message on Tuesday, warning that they were opposed to President Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on Mexican imports, just hours after the president said lawmakers would be “foolish” to try to stop him.

...

“I want you to take a message back” to the White House, Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, told the attorneys, according to people familiar with the meeting. “You didn’t hear a single yes” from the Republican conference. He called the proposed tariffs a $30 billion tax hike on Texans.

That’s idiotic.

That same $100 billion could be produced in Texas, meaning all taxes would stay local.

That $100 billion coming into Texas is actually mostly flowing out of Texas to the rest of the country, including avocados, cars, and such. Texas doesn’t alone eat or use all those cars or avocados.

Why doesn’t Stupid Cruz and his GOPE stand up to Mexico on their animus toward the US in a similar way?

We should never trumpet as “good” anything that substitutes for our own ability in house to do the same. Parents do not exist to nurse other people’s families to success over their own, and if they fully neglected their own, the kids would be taken away.

You are for bad parenting examples on a national level.

Border states Congress people (hse and senate) need to stop vilifying Pres Trump unless they get to work by stopping Mayors of border cities from taking massive bribes from cartels to let them bring drugs and traffic sex slave children through their cities.

Clean up your house first Sen Cruz et al

Show that you can do something positive instead of just trying to stop Trump from doing things because you WON’T!

Shame on you border state politicians that allow the cartels free reign in your states

Are the perks of the Swamp that important to you?

Tariffs are not taxes.
Why would congress claim approval authority?

Maybe we need a new law that says all new “immigrants” must stay within the confines of TEXAS until they are processed by the courts...

Well, the Rs could have done something about illegal immigration when they controlled both houses. All they know how to do is stop someone who IS trying to address the problem.

Worthless, completely worthless.

Looks like they want to lose the Senate as well.

And you think these guys won’t vote to convict the President of the impeachment, if they can get a positive headline out of it?

That’s my number one concern right there. Has been for quite a while now...

Tariffs are not taxes.
Why would congress claim approval authority?

Call them what you will but Article 1 Section 8 says "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises.", so no one really disputes their authority.

They delegated some of this authority to the Executive via legislation but they can take it back any time provided they can override a veto.

These bastards are as stupid as the democrats when it comes to border security and finance.

And the big talk around is where are we going to get our avocados and what will the price be.

Wake the eff up America and secure the damn border

[ Senate Republicans Warn White House Against Mexico Tariffs ]

Ah, Chamber of Commerce not happy, eh, NY Times?

Keep that Democrat propaganda going.

I hope we hit 25%. I want to see Mexico choke on it when Americans finally stop buying a lot of their stuff.

Why aren’t these Republican senators calling on Mexico to stop the immigrant invasion?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Because they don’t give a flying f__k for ordinary Americans, only the corporate lobbyists who fill their campaign coffers.
That needs to change....FAST!

They aren’t cowards... they are bravely representing their paymasters from the US Chamber of Commerce and other Open Borders traitors.

It’s a typical Republican response. Give up and tip their hand at the very start of negotiations.

Some typical Republican bargaining points at the start of negotiations:

“We won’t shut the government down, that’s off the table”

“Of course we won’t cut entitlements (or the standard rate of increase)” .

Now it’s “If Trump puts tariffs on Mexico we will side with the Democrats and remove them”

I’m surprised Mexico agreed to anything with Republican surrender Monkeys cutting the President off at the knees.
