Canada is complicit in a "race-based genocide" against indigenous women, a government inquiry has found.
The report cited research finding indigenous women were 12 times more likely to be killed or to disappear than other women in Canada.
The inquiry blamed the crisis on deep-rooted colonialism and state inaction.
Among more than 200 recommendations is a call for all Canadians to help end violence, including by learning indigenous history.
The 1,200-page document released Monday is the culmination of almost three years of hearings and research by the inquiry into disproportionate violence faced by indigenous women and girls in Canada.
Red River women - the case that sparked the inquiry "Despite their different circumstances and backgrounds, all of the missing and murdered are connected by economic, social, and political marginalisation, racism and misogyny woven into the fabric of Canadian society," said Marion Buller, chief commissioner of the inquiry.
It cost C$92m ($67m; £53m), and heard from more than 2,000 witnesses since 2017 - including survivors of violence and family members.

I think jumping to the conclusion it was genocide is a convenient way of not exploring victimology in depth for fear of being called racist. I also think that the men and women who have worked very, very hard on these cases would find the accusation of “inaction” puzzling. The one inaction I do recall was regarding a highway (Between BC and Washington state) where many of the victims were found. I don’t remember the details.
You can be sure many of the women were victims for the same reason street walkers are often victims. High drug or alcohol use. Transient living. Dependence on strangers. Estrangement from family. Distrust of law enforcement. Low awareness of personal safety and vulnerability.
What officials are supposed to do about the above is a good question. I guarantee any solution proposed would be met with cries of protest.
Ask Hollywood.
Naw. Flawed study. It’s Trump’s Fault! /s
Doesn't matter. It's still Whities fault. How you might in a moment of naivete ask? Doesn't matter. It's still Whities fault. Repeat and rinse ad nauseam. You should know the drill by now which I'm sure you do. ;-)
Like snow and ice along with living in the Attic circle
Indigenous women killed largely by Indigenous men. The Feds come on to the Reservation to investigate and it’s no different than Cops in South Central Los Angeles. Snitches get stitches. Thus crimes are solved at a much lower rate. Yet someone / something has to be blamed and these POS SJW won’t be pointing their fingers at the Indigenous people. There’s no money in that and that is what it always boils down to.
Indian culture is a corrupt blend of alcohol abuse, crime, and welfare.
Oh, sure, that’s a normal, healthy birth. But I know for a fact that in Clairmont, Alberta there was an unexplained rash of births where a curling stone was passed instead of a hockey stick.
You can bet your last buck that the vast majority of perpetrators were indigenous men.
How does females of one race/ethnicity being killed by males of the same race/ethnicity meet the definition of “genocide?”
It’s sad what’s happened to King County...I grew up there...in the 1950s/60s....
This is a corruption of the world.
Genocide was what happened to the Yazidis. The women not fit for sex slavery and men murdered, children enslaved, women raped and killed if they didn’t submit. People were systematically slaughtered and wiped out.
A disproportionate death rate is NOT genocide. Blaming the Canadian government for a more violent, impoverished population’s crime is not fair and won’t solve the problem.

Fresh coming from the BBC who never had the complicated relations of a aboriginal community. Canada is not engaging in race based genocide. What a load of garbage. How are Canadians responsible for what is the responsibility of the reserve chiefs - we have no jurisdiction on reserves.
I live in Canada and about to my limits with this crap.
I have just the solution, more free money for native indians.
Free money solves everything.
I was in Canada years ago and I got the impression if you were starting up a business you needed an Indigenous Indian partner.
Is that the case, or does it depend where in Canada you are locating the business? - Tom
What a bunch of crapola!
Good grief, the Canadian gov bends over backwards to give, “First Nations” people every possible break.
I was never happy at having to hire FN personnel on a big project I was managing in BC, because if they were worthless it was almost impossible to fire them. Had to just transfer them to another part of the project.
Every month we had to submit to the province and national gov statistics on how many FN workers we had on site, gender, and a breakdown of their jobs. If we didn’t meet certain numbers, someone would ask why...usually from our own corporate office.
Our corporate types were always terrified we weren’t meeting quotas and would get a bunch of bad publicity.
I could go on for pages!!
The Birth of a Canadian ...LOL
Very good, AC, Eh?
