Grassley slams Trump tariffs on Mexico: 'A misuse of presidential tariff authority'
The Hill ^ | May 30, 2019

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) condemned President Trump's new tariffs on Mexico late Thursday, calling the move a "misuse" of presidential tariff authority and cautioning the levies could derail passage of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

"Trade policy and border security are separate issues. This is a misuse of presidential tariff authority and counter to congressional intent," Grassley said in a statement.

The lawmaker cautioned that following through on Trump's tariff threat "would seriously jeopardize passage of USMCA," a revision of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

"I support nearly every one of President Trump’s immigration policies, but this is not one of them," he added.

Grassley is a 100%, corn-fed GOPer. Pay him no mind in matters of trade/illegal immigration. He is owned by Tom Donohue and his Chambers of Horrors.

That’s what I love about our party. They stick together and support our President. Oh, wait. It’s just another arrogant Congressional asshole, standing up for the rights of Congressmen everywhere who make money out of open borders.

Love Trump. Trump thinks outside the box. Congress won’t do their job. What is Trump supposed to do?

Grassley also helps corrupt actions at the USPTO.
Does nothing when crime, treason, sedition occur.

He is useless, to take up space,
so the payoff to him must be quite high.

No reason to pass it now.

That’s a discouraging thought - but I bet you’re right.

These corrupt weasels are getting paid off... to do nothing. They sit there, for year after year after year, make a lot of noise, have a lot of meetings, and NEVER accomplish anything positive for we-the-people.

Trump isn’t going to be around forever. We need to flush the Republican party down the toilet (where is can join the Democrat party, who enjoys living in the sewer) and have a new party full of Trump followers who are uncorrupt and honestly want to help our country thrive - everything these current vermin in Congress aren’t.

The alternative is to close the border. If Mexico persists and it is going to, Mexico, becomes a de facto enemy.

The border must be closed. No Trade. No people passing. Those thaat pass a closed border can be arrested and immediately deported.

Everybody is trying to run out the clock

Trump must smash the clock and effectively end the game

Remember, early in the campaign, Grassley wouldn’t come right out and endorse Trump. Instead he merely “appeared” at a Trump rally, to hedge his bet.

Grassley is a snake. Bought and paid for, just like most of the rest of them.

The president is using the carrot and stick approach to diplomacy. The current Mexican president it a real Trump hater so asking politely to stem the flow of refugees won’t help. Since the President doesn’t have a carrot he made one. He took away a percentage of Mexico’s income. Not a large percentage, mind you. Just enough they’d notice. Giving it back is the carrot. Right away the Mexican president asked for talks. Trump wants him to use his considerable police powers to stop the immigrants, instead of providing them with food, water and buses. I think it will work.

As for the politicians making negative statements instead of supporting the President...it’s about getting their name into the headlines more than anything else. If they were to say, “I support President Trump,” that wouldn’t even get a two line sound bite.

Chuck Grassley is, at bottom, a 20th Century Iowa farmer. That isn't meant to be a pejorative, but it does explain many of his quirks.

These guys are already all pissed off about grain prices and China tariffs - never mind that many of them have benefitted two generations of government subsidies and tax breaks most other trades would kill to have - and some of them have a crapload of shitty (sometimes literally) menial farm jobs they get a houseful of illegals to do for little more than cerveza money. It is hard for some of these guys to see past a lost nickel in order to get the bigger picture, and their "friends" in BigAgCo and associated trade orgs know how to rile them up.

Chuck is an old guy getting verklempt about someone stepping on his donors'/remaining farm constituents' toes. It isn't about principles, it's about money. And don't think the Iowa education establishment - Iowa's other big business - wants to miss out on FedGov $$$ for every little Guatemalan sitting in a classroom even if they are passing along the latest third-world respiratory ailment to the other kids.

Nearly all of Grassley’s pronouncements like this should be prefaced with, “Because that’s not the way we’ve always done it...”

Seriously, did they really believe DJT was going to automagically become their puppet? Did they learn NOTHING from the campaign and election?

“This fossil needs to retire! Just another fair weather establishment type!”

Eighty five years old. Way past retirement age.

Won his last race (2016) with 60% of the vote so he is very popular in his state. Trump won Iowa with 51% of the vote in 2016. Grassley next faces the voters in 2022 when he will be 88.

Assuming Trump is impeached by the House Grassley is one of the Senators who could surprise and vote to convict, particularly if he decides not to run again in 2022.
