The eight co-champions of the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee, from left, Shruthika Padhy, 13, of Cherry Hill, N.J., Erin Howard, 14, of Huntsville, Ala., Rishik Gandhasri, 13, of San Jose, Calif., Christopher Serrao, 13, of Whitehouse Station, N.J., Saketh Sundar, 13, of Clarksville, Md., Sohum Sukhatankar, 13, of Dallas, Texas, Rohan Raja, 13, of Irving, Texas, and Abhijay Kodali, 12, of Flower Mound, Texas, hold the trophy at the end of the competition in Oxon Hill, Md., Friday, May 31, 2019.

OXON HILL, Md. — The Latest on the National Spelling Bee (all times local):

12:07 p.m.

Eight spellers were better than the dictionary. They were better than anything the Scripps National Spelling Bee could throw at them. And they all ended up with a hand on the trophy.

In the most extraordinary ending in the 94-year history of the competition, the bee ended in an eight-way tie on Thursday night. The eight co-champions spelled the final 47 words correctly, going through five consecutive perfect rounds.

Each will get the full winner’s prize of $50,000 in cash.

I at least believe avid readers are more likely to need glasses young. Used to be the case anyway.

"Base pay" of surgeons is all over the chart. The surgeon I mentioned is a partner in a local practice. There's no telling how much he makes. Your estimate is probably in the ballpark. $5 to $10 mil/yr.

Another partner has a home in the Hamptons, etc.

But their new hires for surgeons come in at <$200 K/year. I don't get the impression they have much chance for partnership. They've already got some partners they need to discard.

Maybe cause they get bullied. So, instead they stay inside and read. 🤣 Oddly, I never got bullied much growing up, wearing glasses and being one of or the shortest kid in class, you would think it would of happened a lot more. I could read well from a very young age. But watched cartoons more frequently, though. That explains alot.🤣

The judges should just make up some words on-the-fly with arbitrary spelling - that should weed a few out.

The picture of the co-winners made me think of the story a day or two back about how the Miss India contest had only light-skinned contestants...

In looking at the rest of her resume, she also had been captain of the U.S. team that won the world championship for baton twirling in France.

I dated a twirler in high school. She became captain of the squad. All the cheerleaders already had boyfriends.

Our society has decided that it would be easier to bring people up by just giving them things opposite working hard and being the only winner.

I don’t think that any of us from Oxon Hill Jr. High would have made it into the final 8. For that matter, we wouldn’t have made it into the first round either.

8 Indian kids and one white kid !!

What’s it with Indians that make them so good at spelling?

And I know a lot of Indian kids who were home schooled that participated in the National Spelling Bee. I wonder how many home schooled kids there are in this group...

Well, first they have to learn how to spell their own name. After that, the rest is easy!

RE: Well, first they have to learn how to spell their own name. After that, the rest is easy!

Heck, I can’t even PRONOUNCE some of their names :)

I had a colleague from Sri Lanka whose full name was : Yogaramanan Navaratnarajah ( I was the only one bold enough to learn to pronounce it correctly ). They called him Yogan for short though.

But then, I would believe that the Icelanders could learn to dominate this competition. I can’t even pronounce the name of the volcano that erupted in 2010... What was it? I think it was : Eyjafjallajökull

The token “racist” MINORITY.

I was one years ago for a job interview at a Water Treatment Plant in FAR South Texas. They flew Me down from San Antonio, picked Me up, interviewed, Background check, minor physical plus eye and Drug testing, took Me to lunch, Plant tours, 2ND interview with City Officials, told Me I had the job, flew Me back to S/A.

Next day I get a call telling Me the offer was withdrawn because of NSF Check that was cleared up and reduced to a minimum charge (like a Traffic Ticket on Record) 10 years ago.

After the call I sat there thinking WTF and then it hit Me ! Goobermint Quota B.S. and I was the Token White Boy.

As I thought about it more it hit Me- EVERYONE I had met there was of Mexican heritage/descent...

It was probably for the better because it was in Harlingen aka BFE, TX. 12 or so miles to the Texas/messyco Border.

LOL! If Joe Biden was sniffing all of that Indian hair he’d be overcome by the smell of curry.

— How about the results from the United States - I don’t really care who wins in India.

“at the end of the competition in Oxon Hill, Md.”

I assume you never did particularly well in a geography bee.

And they’re stalling until the time window is about to run out. The two conditions aren’t mutually exclusive.
