How can you stall when you have a running clock? They are entitled to a certain amount of time to answer. They are penalized if they exceed the allotted time.

Do football teams stall when the clock is running? Absolutely.

Do hockey teams? Yes, especially when killing penalties.

If each speller is allotted 2 minutes and uses the full 2 when unnecessary then that is stalling. QED. It also maximizes the overall time needed for the full Bee - and the decision to make the outcome a mass tie at the end is proof.

It’s clear many of them are asking for repeats, definitions, etc. without listening to a single word said thereafter by the proctor. The Bee organizers have eliminated asking individual questions about etymology, usage, pronunciation etc and all that info is given in one go. Why? Because in previous years kids used to ask all those questions merely to delay the moment of truth.
