OXON HILL, Md. — The Latest on the National Spelling Bee (all times local):

12:07 p.m.

Eight spellers were better than the dictionary. They were better than anything the Scripps National Spelling Bee could throw at them. And they all ended up with a hand on the trophy.

In the most extraordinary ending in the 94-year history of the competition, the bee ended in an eight-way tie on Thursday night. The eight co-champions spelled the final 47 words correctly, going through five consecutive perfect rounds.

Each will get the full winner’s prize of $50,000 in cash.

yes, and $50,000, and probably a college scholarship - wife and I watched this Bee last night. Those kids are terrific. Those aren’t participation trophies, they were earned.

“IIRC...They are provided with a complete list of words which include those used in the bee. “
Say it isn’t so. . . . :(
Bring back the original rules (or, something like that).

If memory serves, when I was in the Bee (in 1982), we were handed a booklet filled without about 3000 words. I'm pretty sure that the book also said that they could use words that weren't in the book, and it was mostly for practice and as a guide.

It ain’t hard to understand why “Indians” do so well. Look at their names. Once a kid has learned to spell his Indian name everything in English is down hill.

I thought these spelling bees were like baseball. It doesn’t end until there is a winner. If it gets late then it continues the next day and so on.

204 pages, and only up to the letter P.

I don't recall our word list having definitions, but I lost in the later rounds in the Texas State contest.

One of these things is not like the others, can you guess what it is? Only one doesn’t wear glasses! Congrats to all the winners. They work VERY hard to get where they are.

Beat me to it!

I had a long Slavic last name that helped me too!

Students from India predominate in many competitions, such as the Geography Bee. It is a cultural thing. Chinese parents emphasize science/technology competitions, often team competitions, more than the spelling and other memorization-based contests.

Indians are hard working high achievers.

An acquaintance's parents immigrated from India. He was born here. He said that when he was a child his parents told him in no uncertain terms he was going to be a surgeon. Period. End of story.

He is one of the two or three best surgeons in his specialty in the state. Also nationally respected. And fabulously wealthy.

Not that all Indians are like that, but, just saying.

Mrs. L are on an overnight to an outdoor range today. This was playing in the bar where we had dinner. We couldn’t believe some of the words. Congrats to all of them.

These kids were well trained at stalling and asking for questions to be repeated.

They’ll do great in DC.

I’m no economic voyeur but I always wonder about surgeon pay, given their irreplaceability and the fact that they ‘stay in their lane’ and probably don’t have the need, time, or desire to get involved with entrepreneurial ventures (beyond medical practices/offices).

$5 mil? 10?

Obviously once the cash comes in there are investment portfolios etc but base pay is the question.

People of Indian ancestry have the highest median incomes in the US, and second place isn't even close. I'd guess all the spelling bees featuring Indian kids show the reason for it - they prioritize education and learning.

And then you look at India itself - still mired in bureaucracy, still an object lesson in the failures of socialism, still a place the smartest Indians try to leave.
