Netflix Will Have to Pay to Punish Georgia
National Review ^ | May 29, 2019 6:30 AM | Kyle Smith

This is why I’m skeptical that Netflix is going to boycott Georgia. Netflix is an unusual kind of Hollywood studio in that it is spending money at a rate that would make Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blanch, but Netflix is also having one of those “Objects in Mirror May Be Closer Than They Appear” moments from a Jurassic Park movie. On the left: an AT&T-Rex (the new AT&T streaming service starring its WarnerMedia properties, set to launch in coming months). On the right, a rampaging Mousiraptor (Disney’s new streaming service, debuting in November and fueled by all of the Marvel and Pixar movies it will soon chomp off of Netflix). Overhead: the Huludactyl (Hulu, which Disney now owns, along with the Fox film studio, is preparing to dominate Netflix in programming for grownups). The last thing Netflix needs is to be creating problems for itself by pulling out of Georgia and forsaking all those yummy tax subsidies.

Netflix could signal to Lefty Hollywood, otherwise known as Hollywood, that it is onboard with the talent’s progressive agenda by backing out of Georgia. That would make the company heroes to the creative community. But what is that worth to Netflix? I can’t see too many George Clooneys making their filmmaking decisions based solely on love for Netflix’s politics. So far the A-list Hollywood talent, such as Ron Howard and Jordan Peele, have said they will continue to work in Georgia but promised to donate to activist groups fighting the abortion law. Based on a report in Variety, Hollywood isn’t quite as determined as Clooney’s Oscar speech made it sound:

Media companies with deep financial investments in the state have so far remained mum on the matter. Not one major studio would comment on the ongoing issue when approached by Variety, including the film

Good.

I hope netfreaks ####ed itself by opening its mouth too fast.

NOW, if it leaves, it’s screwed out of $$ and if it stays it’s screwed because the leftist netfreaks viewers will demand action.

Their other option is to film in British Columbia. But is hard to make it look sunny when it’s raining.

The reason the film in Georgia and B.C. is the CO$T is a fraction of the cost in Hollywood/California

As a Georgia taxpayer, Nutflux - payback all of the tax break money you have received from our state.

Then - NEVER come back!

I told Netflix to pound sand when they hired Obama.

Netflix original series have not been as successful as they might have hoped.

Recently, they cancelled many of their ‘super hero’ series and several other series. Many of these were into their 2nd or 3rd season, but with Netflix, a season is 6 to 15 episodes.

With network/cable series, the studios can renew those to a point where they can become salable/profitable in syndication. That usually involves 80+ episodes. The cancelled Netflix series are less than half that number of episodes.

I assume that they’re counting on the measure dying in the courts. That way they can virtue signal with limited financial risk.

Hollyweird films in the South because it’s cheaper. Their bottom line is worth more to them than their convictions.

They cancelled them because they were licensed from Disney and Disney is going to pull them anyway. Why pay to show something you don't own when you can make your own show and own 100% of it?

What it this, 1995? The business has moved a long way from that model.

The cancelled Netflix series are less than half that number of episodes.

Disney's problem, not Netflix's.

That is a problem in Georgia, too. A lot of rainy and overcast days.

Since I cut the cable, I have subscribed to Netflix. Most of the stuff they spend their money on is trash.

Same for Amazon.

A few good films, but a lot of junk not worth even a few wasted minutes of viewing time.

I ditched cable3 months ago and signed up for Netflix. Unfortunately they are not as good as promised and push a lot of porno* on their regular channel, so I’m already thinking I’ll drop it. Any suggestions?

Tried to watch Roswell, New Mexico. Not 15 minutes in they are trashing Trump and the wall. Only lunatic leftists can make an alien show an SJW propaganda tool. Just about all their original content is leftist garbage so I canceled it. Looks like I have about 3 weeks to finish watching Person of Interest, which is a great show.. and of course not created by them.

Upon reading about Netflix’s antics, I decided to “divest” my movie portfolio.

I cancelled my netflix membership.

Tuck Hollywood and the ass they ride on....

Stupid Netflix shooting themself in the foot. The ONLY thing they had going for them was The Office...then they announced they will probably drop it. SEE YA...says I...and pretty much everyone I know. And if it’s sooner...so be it.

I dropped them when they affiliated with the Obamas. And frankly, I don’t give a dam if they leave our state.

Same here. It really pissed me off that they trashed the wall and the President. Eff 'em.

As an aside, I thought the new Roswell looked amateurish even before the wall trashing comment. Just plain cheesy.
