Fiat Chrysler said May 21 that construction will begin immediately on a new, $1.6-billion assembly plant for Jeep Grand Cherokees, a new Jeep SUV and hybrid cars on Detroit's east side.
The automaker receives tax breaks and 215 acres of land adjacent to its Jefferson North Manufacturing plant from the city and state in the deal. The land Fiat Chrysler is getting is valued at $108 million and the tax incentives at a savings of $291 million. To put together the land parcels for the deal, the city of Detroit agreed to purchases and exchanges with prominent landowners such as the Moroun family and developer Michael Kelly.

(Gretchen) Whitmer (D), the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and city of Detroit, I am pleased to confirm that plans to invest in our Jefferson North Assembly Plant and build a new state-of-the-art assembly plant in Detroit have been given the green light," Mark Stewart, COO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles North America, said in a statement. " This investment enables us to deliver on this promise in the state and city we call home."
Construction is expected to be completed by late 2020 and Fiat Chrysler said in a statement that it expects to begin producing vehicles at the new plant for the 2021 model year. ..

Detroit? I guess there is plenty of cheap land and/or facilities to be had. Do not believe even with this plus that it was a good choice of locations. Other more “non-union” areas would have been more appealing.
Fiat Chrysler operates under a contract with the UAW. Every plant they operate will have union workers — even in a “non-union” area.

Now if they would only invest some money in the Chrysler and Dodge brands. Chrysler is down to two models: the 300, and the Pacifica. Dodge hasn’t had a complete redesign of any of its products in ten years. They can’t live off of “special edition” Challengers and Chargers forever. Their vehicle lineup is so old, the dealer should issue antique tags when you buy one.

Depends on how you define “Dodge”. Dodge pickups stopped using the Dodge name when Fiat took over and renamed them “Ram”. The Ram half tonners got a new facelift for 2019, and in my opinion looks pretty good. Next year the 3/4 and 1 ton models will supposedly get a redesign.
What’s interesting here is Ram trucks is outselling Chevy, even with their old 9 year old body style.
As soon as the larger models get their redesign, we will get one, probably a tonner. Will be my first Dodge truck since my M37 in Vietnam.
Ram Trucks were split off from Dodge and became a separate division almost 10 years ago. The Ram and Jeep Divisions are the real money makers for the company. The Chrysler and Dodge passenger car divisions have been almost completely neglected. I read elsewhere this morning that FCA is pursuing a possible merger with Renault. If that happens, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Chrysler and Dodge lines completely eliminated..

FCAU stock crumpled a bit in the past week or so, was trading near $15, closed Friday below $13. By the time this plant is putting out product, the US market will need a larger sedan with fuel economy 30 and up, and that doesn't require an entrance-exit like a *******ed jet fighter. Thanks Cronos.

Nope, even if Renault says yes this time (and it's been no the two, three, four times Fiat-Chrysler has expressed interest), neither the Renault nor the Fiat label has the kind of market presence in the US that Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep has. Renault is literally not sold in the US (their last attempt was when they owned, then sold, AMC, and as part of that deal Chrysler revived the Monaco nameplate to try to sell a Renault; the local dealer here complained about the thousands they'd had to spend for the unique tool set needed for service), and Fiat's latest iteration of small and lower-end sports cars have not caught fire (other than the few which have literally caught fire). If you're going to build a subcompact, make sure it gets decent fuel economy, otherwise, the buyer says **** this. :^)

Renault doesn’t really make anything that would sell here; some very small crossovers. They don’t even make a proper sedan or a sports-type car, just small hatchback mini-minivan things.
