My father is buried there. Greatest father a child could ever wish for. Whenever I revisit where I grew up, I always make a trip to his gravesite. As I walk past all the stones, the history is overwhelming.

Many don’t know the mansion at the top of the hill inside Arlington National Cemetery is Robert E. Lee’s home.

At the outbreak of the War, the Lee family stayed away from their home which looks down on the DC Capitol from the Virginia side.

The first Union soldiers to die in battle were transported to the Leee estate and buried in their backyard as a message to General Lee that he was responsible for these deaths, deaths of soldiers that he once led as their General when the country had one army.

That’s how Arlington National Cemetery came to be.

Been there twice in my life. Sobering doesn’t even begin to cover all the emotions I felt being there.

It just so happened a military funeral was taking place while I was there and that stupid cultist church who used to protest funerals were there protesting it. Anger rose up quickly with every fiber of my being. My Mom had to hold me back from going up to one of them and telling them how I felt.

Thank you for posting this.

As a young Marine, I used to hate it when my company got tagged for guard duty.

It was only 4 hours on, 8 hours off, and usually only a week or so long, but man, did it wear on a guy. And it wasn’t anywhere near “formal”. We could slouch as we walked our posts unless some nosy officer or senior SNCO was in viewing range.

Formal guard duty, in full dress uniform under constant observation?

Oh boy. Not for me.

Much respect.

Semper Fi.

I visited there a couple of summers ago and the Tomb Of The Unknown. No words. I’m from a military family.

The discipline and dedication that it takes for those young men to guard the tomb of the unknown soldier is unbelievable.

Nice to see what book Tom Cotton has been writing instead of working his day job. In particular the Senate intel committee he sits on that that is colluding with Democrats to obstruct the MAGA agenda.

This writing should be read aloud to people such as John Cusack.

My husband and I took my 14 year old there this AM. While we are in traffic trying to get to VA Beach I read this beautiful article to my family. The day was perfect 78 degree breezes swept over Arlington in full sun and here and there were split trees on the ground from the previous days tornadoc streak over D.C.( in warning to Trump’s enemies)...
So glad I took this trip finally

I salute Arlington every day I pass. I have noticed that many others do, too.

The last time I was at Arlington for Memorial Day I was taking the slow walk, meandering from path to path, trying to choke back tears. Off in the distance there was a headstone, no different from the others but overlaid with flowers and mementos. I went to it and read the name. Audie Murphy.

I was at Arlington yesterday. Paid my respect to a close relative laid to rest there. Watched the changing of the guard. Made a special stop to visit Audie Murphy’s place of rest... he died so young. Watched a passing funeral procession. Just generally strolled around in several sections so I could see the names up close and say thanks.
