Conservative blocks House passage of disaster relief bill (Rep Chip Roy)

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, blocked a disaster relief bill in the House on Friday by objecting to a unanimous consent vote.

The Texas Republican who previously worked for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), argued the House should not have recessed before debating the legislation and holding a vote.

“I'm here today primarily because if I do not object, Congress will have passed into law a bill that spends $19 billion of taxpayer money without members of Congress being present in our nation's capital to vote on it,” he said on the floor.

“Secondly, it's a bill that includes nothing to address the clear national emergency and humanitarian crisis we have at our southern border.”

He also cited concerns with how the bill would ultimately be paid for.

The $19.1 billion disaster aid package, which did not include the $4.5 billion in border funding requested by President Trump, passed the Senate in an 85-8 vote on Thursday.

The measure includes $900 million in aid to Puerto Rico — a provision the president previously objected to — in addition to assistance for areas of the United States affected by hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes and wildfires.

The president previously agreed to sign the legislation.

Well, can’t argue with his reasoning.

I’d like the disaster relief package for folks, but there are others clearly left out of this bill.

That’s the rest of the nation, that has to put up with murder, rape, child rape, robberies, thefts...

I don’t hear anyone lamenting our losses.

Good for Roy.

Idiocy like this clown is what hurts conservative gop voting. TO hold up a bill that everyone knows is going to pass by huge majorities and is wanted by the president is just stupid vanity and proves that this moron Roy is an incompetent member of Congress.

More taxpayer money for PR? No, heck no. They are lazy, corrupt leaches. PR should be cut loose from the US. It is nothing but a drag on the US, a liability. They produce nothing and negative to the US, which would be better off without PR.

I disagree slightly re: what PR produces. They produce tens of thousands of Dem voters.

Yeah, well we are just the ones paying the bills, why should congress care about us. I agree disaster relief is important, now they have to admit the border is a national disaster as well.

Good man. Frankly, I think we ought to look at getting the government out of the disaster relief business. There’s nothing in the Constitution that authorizes it.

You might try reading the Preamble. The part about promoting the general welfare.

That’s the rest of the nation, that has to put up with murder, rape, child rape, robberies, thefts...

Bingo!

And that is to say nothing of increased taxes.

The bill was tailored to serve the political purposes of those who fail to understand what will make America great again. There can be no doubt they seek the wide-reaching political power that typically results from communities in strife (see e.g., San Francisco, Seattle, etc.)

One wonders about the reasoning of the R Senate leadership on this action. Did it originally misinform Trump on the character of the bill and the wisdom of exercising political opposition?

I am not affected by this bill at all but I hope those persons in the disaster zones are able to recover as soon as possible.

LOL. He’s worked for Cornyn and Rick Perry. No doubt a rock ribbed constitional conservative.

In reality, this just more Amash style senseless virtue signalling from a climbing careerist here. Nothing laudable about this stunt at all. The bill is going to become law regardless of whatever beltway theater is attached to it.

I guess with so many votes they don't need him?

There is an idiot in this post but it is not Roy.

Why would the entire house head for the planes without making sure that they had really 'passed the bill'.

Roy is correct. The members of congress don't give a shit about $19 Billion for disaster relief, or a couple of billion for border security, when their couple of days of eating hot dogs, water skiing, and drinking beer will be delayed.

Screw them and you, okeydonker.

BTW, Trump settled for this piece of crap and did the bill pass?
