Former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli is expected to take a top job at the Department of Homeland Security to help steer the administration's immigration policies, a senior administration official said.

Cuccinelli is not expected to take on the role of "immigration czar," a position President Donald Trump had considered establishing to improve coordination between the agencies involved in handling the steep uptick in migrants crossing the US's southern border in recent months.

But Trump and White House officials hope Cuccinelli, a politically savvy immigration hardliner, will ensure the White House's immigration priorities are being carried out at the Department of Homeland Security.

Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a prominent conservative and expert on the complexities of the party convention process, has begun pitching GOP delegates on a proposal that would have far-reaching consequences for the party. The idea: strip the Republican National Committee chair of power and decentralize control of the party apparatus, handing it over to the 168 RNC members who compose the national party. The package, according to three sources who’ve been briefed on the matter, would also aim to diminish the overall power of the RNC and empower grass-roots conservatives in future party nominations. Under the concept, for example, the RNC chair would lose the power to appoint powerful party officers.

That's a "good look".

The Cuccinnelli effort to strip powers from the RNC chair is apparently separate from another rules-writing package being pushed by a pro-Cruz super PAC that Cuccinelli helps to oversee. That change would seek to encourage states to hold closed primaries — a format Cruz fared well in. It would shift the delegate-allocation process, penalizing states that choose to hold open primaries and allowing states where there is no party registration to hold closed caucuses or conventions to allocate delegates, according to a person familiar with that plan.

That's a real "good look".

I realize we get immigrants (legal) and illegals from all over the world. The thing is most of the problems are on the Southern border. Is it just me or would it make more sense to put someone that knows about those issues in particular in that job?

The problems on this border are many layered, and not easy to recognize, sort out, deal with. I have no one in mind but not sure someone from Virginia is going to begin to understand. A conservative from a border state would be able to get up to speed so much fast.
