Demands new powers be transferred to international authority that ‘manages’ interests of nations
Pope Francis recently called for global governance to fight climate change, asserting, “The nation state cannot be considered as an absolute.”
During an address to the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, the Pope condemned “growing nationalism that neglects the common good” and called for more globalism.
“The nation state cannot be considered as an absolute, as an island with respect to the surrounding context,” he said, adding, “The nation state is no longer able to procure the common good of its populations alone.”
Pope Francis said that a “special authority legally and concordantly constituted” was necessary to facilitate the implementation of new climate change policies.
He went on to demand that power be transferred from nation states to “intergovernmental institutions that manage their common interests.”
“This universal common good, in turn, must acquire a more pronounced juridical value at international level,” concluded Francis.
The Pope has made innumerable statements bashing nationalism and populism, particularly in the context of his advocacy of bringing millions of migrants into Europe.
Under his guidance, the Catholic Church has also fully embraced the global warming mantra despite deep skepticism amongst Christians.

Global governance — not even to help humanity adapt to changing conditions on the globe, but to try to keep the globe in a static condition — just sounds wrongheaded. The forces involved are greater than anything humanity can muster against them. I could see a line of prayer that blessings come through the climate and through wisdom to deal with the climate. This doesn’t have to jump on any “scientific” fad at all.
If the Church wants to be a political organization then they should be taxed like one.
Not me! I would not presume to comment on Catholicism, except to say that it's never been anything that I'd consider as an expression of my Christianity. I have a problem with a “celibate clergy” that all too frequently “buggers” little boys, and seems to be able to utilize "political connections" to avoid punishment.
Believing relationships between persons and Christ are ultimately personal things. These carry on validly in churches of many denominational followings. It isn’t what the priest says that matters here; it is in Whom the Christian believes.
That said, gaffes like this will raise many difficult questions of loyalty. The most devout towards Christ in Catholic churches will have to refuse this attempt to use the church to muster a global secular government for a cause for which we have no reasonable proof of need. They may be loyal dissenters within their own denomination.

The good Lord must get Excedrin headaches over the way Christendom carries on sometimes. We’d fully expect the whole thing to blow apart if Christ weren’t God in the person of the Son.

The recognition and protection of private property advances the common interest, not one-world government. This man, Pope Francis, who claims the opposite is some kind of a communist.
Before the recognition of private property, life largely consisted of predation and defense. As much as half of human activity was devoted to stealing and the prevention of stealing. You can see this in what passes for history; namely, nearly constant war, along with widespread slavery and oppression. The Golden Ages of the past were isolated and short-lived, but illustrate what might have been possible with the establishment of the rule of law.
The initial recognition of private property was in land; i.e., various tracts of the surface of the planet. But, since then, and especially since the industrial revolution, other forms of property have been recognized. For several examples, mineral rights, water rights and intellectual property.
Now we come to the possibility that the atmosphere of the planet is a common resource, that it is a scarce resource, and that individuals and nations shouldn’t treat it as a free resource (meaning, available to anybody in unlimited quantity). There are two different approaches to managing a common resource. One is collective management, such as recommended by Pope Francis; and, the other is to privatize the resource.
Since the atmosphere is such an all-inclusive resource, collectivization would be communism on a global basis. Being in charge of the atmosphere, the one-world government would be in charge of everything. Pope Francis is revealing either that he is the Anti-Christ ushering in the one-world government of Revelation or that he is merely a fool who should be ignored.
Privatization, on the other hand, would involve recognizing to each nation-state its right to its portion of the atmosphere, which it could manage as it sees fit. Individual nations could choose communism, while others capitalism, while yet others something in between. Nations would be free to buy and sell rights to the atmosphere from each other; and, so, establish an international price.
Within nations, governments could allocate rights however they choose, such as so much to each person (for breathing) and the remainder to industry, with industry paying for its use of the resource through taxes (which cost would be passed along to consumers).
For an idea of what the higher price of carbon-based fuel might be, it has been estimated that irrigating the deserts of Sahara and Australia to grow trees could off-set all current industrial emissions of carbon dioxide, at a price of $1 per gallon of gasoline. In practice, a higher price to carbon-based fuels will induce a mix of responses, such as alternative energy and conservation, as well as other off-sets. A dollar, then, is the upper limit. With other responses, the increase might be 50 cents per gallon. If your circumstances allow, you, yourself, might grow some trees to earn carbon credits to sell in the market, to off-set the higher price of the products you buy.
Look, nobody wants to pay more than he has to for gasoline or anything else. But, one-world, communist government is too high a price to pay.
(I should point out that the initial distribution of rights to the atmosphere is potentially a sticky wicket. Since this issue gained prominence, I’ve recommended an initial distribution to each nation according to population equal to the U.S. per capita amount; and, then gradually reducing the amounts in proportion until we get to a level that is sustainable. Initially, nobody would have to do anything. But, over time, the incentives would be in place to get the job done.)
