The best I can figure is that Romney wants to be waiting in the wings when Trump is defeated or impeached, so he can step in and be the savior of the GOP. That means he has to walk a fine line - undermine Trump but not so obviously as to alienate the GOP base too much. Of course, Trump’s not going to be impeached or lose reelection, but the left and the RINO’s are clinging to that belief because it’s the only hope they’ve got.
