Road Trip: Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Virginia

.nnshipyard6

The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, often called the Norfolk Navy Yard and abbreviated as NNSY, is a U.S. Navy facility in Portsmouth, Virginia, for building, remodeling, and repairing the Navy's ships. It is the oldest and largest industrial facility that belongs to the U.S. Navy as well as the most multifaceted. Located on the Elizabeth River, the yard is just a short distance upriver from its mouth at Hampton Roads.

Currently, the shipyard is composed of several noncontiguous areas totaling 1,275 acres. Norfolk Naval Shipyard provides repair and modernization services for every type of ship that the U.S. Navy has in service, which includes amphibious vessels, submarines, guided missile cruisers, and supercarriers, although in recent years the shipyard has primarily focused on nuclear ships and nuclear support ships. The Norfolk yard is one of the few facilities on the East Coast capable of dry docking nuclear aircraft carriers.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard has the distinction of being the oldest shipyard that is a U.S. Navy Shipyard; it dates to November 1, 1767 and includes construction of two Continental Navy ships and service as a leased federal yard beginning on May 27, 1794. It was bought on June 15, 1801. Purchase of the first site for a U.S. Navy shipyard, the Washington Navy Yard, was completed on October 2, 1799.

Milestone ships have included the USS CHESAPEAKE (one of the first six built after the Navy Department was established), the USS TEXAS (the first U.S. Navy battleship to be commissioned), the USS RALEIGH (early cruiser), the USS MERRIMACK/CSS VIRGINIA (pioneer ironclad), and the USS LANGLEY (first U.S. Navy aircraft carrier).

Marvelously Unique

Bible in a Year: 1 Chronicles 13–15; John 7:1–27

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:14

Human beings are not special—at least according to the London Zoo. In 2005, the zoo introduced a four-day exhibit: “Humans in Their Natural Environment.” The human “captives” were chosen through an online contest. To help visitors understand the humans, the zoo workers created a sign detailing their diet, habitat, and threats. According to the zoo’s spokesperson, the goal of the exhibit was to downplay the uniqueness of human beings. One participant in the exhibit seemed to agree. “When they see humans as animals, here, it kind of reminds them that we’re not that special.”

What a stark contrast to what the Bible says about human beings: God “fearfully and wonderfully” made us in “his image” (Psalm 139:14; Genesis 1:26–27).

David began Psalm 139 by celebrating God’s intimate knowledge of him (vv. 1–6) and His all-encompassing presence (vv. 7–12). Like a master weaver, God not only formed the intricacies of David’s internal and external features (vv. 13–14), but He also made him a living soul, giving spiritual life and the ability to intimately relate to God. Meditating on God’s handiwork, David responded in awe, wonder, and praise (v. 14).

Human beings are special. God created us with marvelous uniqueness and the awesome ability to have an intimate relationship with Him. Like David, we can praise Him because we’re the workmanship of His loving hands.

By Marvin Williams

Reflect & Pray

What are some practical implications of knowing and believing you’re fearfully and wonderfully made? What are some negative consequences of not believing this?

God created human beings to be like Him.

In the early 80s I was living in Virginia Beach.

The carrier U.S.S. Nimitz had a training accident when a plane crashed on deck and several 500 pound bombs went off. I saw it rounding the Virginia Capes and took a few photos of it.

There was some kind of military crisis at the time and they wanted it back in service as soon as possible. The Norfolk Navy Shipyard had it repaired in two days.

The local paper said no other shipyard in the world could have done that.

Interestingly, it is actually located in Portsmouth. To me it sounded like the locals pronounced it Porch Mutt.

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...any idea when you can bring Blue home?
Tomorrow, maybe?

I anxious to hear if she feels different since you didn’t “use” the rear brakes anyway.

Looks like I got here too late to catch you. If you’re on the road, I hope you haven’t been caught up in any of the storms. Been a wild day in TX.
