Despite Attempts to Drive Them out of Business, Chick-Fil-A to become 3rd Largest Restaurant Chain

Chick-Fil-A to Become Third-Largest Fast Food Chain in U.S. FROM THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: As the biggest fast-food chains have expanded menus to attract new customers, Chick-fil-A Inc. has gained ground with a different strategy: its focus on chicken sandwiches.

Since its founding in Atlanta in 1967 by entrepreneur Truett Cathy, Chick-fil-A’s signature item has been its breaded chicken-breast sandwich served with pickles on a buttered toasted bun. The company sells breakfast and salads, too, but its relatively simple menu stands out, compared with its fast-food rivals.

Now five decades later, the closely held company this year is poised to become the third-biggest U.S. restaurant chain by sales behind McDonald’s Corp. MCD -0.39% and Starbucks Corp. , according to food-service consultancy Technomic Inc. The growth reflects Chick-fil-A’s expansion over the past decade, as well as consumers’ broader turn toward chicken.

“WE’VE BEEN PRETTY CONSISTENT IN HOW, OVER MULTIPLE DECADES, WE’RE GOING TO TAKE IT SLOW AND STEADY,” MARK MORAITAKIS, A CHICK-FIL-A SENIOR DIRECTOR, SAID ABOUT THE COMPANY’S EXPANSION. “IT’S PAID OFF FOR US.”

Sales from Chick-fil-A’s restaurants have tripled over the past decade, reaching $10.2 billion last year, Technomic said, even though the chain is closed on Sundays, a practice implemented by its conservative Christian founder.

Never been to one of their restaurants.

I'm sure its been said. But they have a VERY unremarkable business model. They hire the right teenagers, pay them a little more than the competition, train them to be HAPPY, POLITE and Professional. Then they mostly get the order right and take REALLY good care of the customers. Then they give tons of money to local charities and schools.

Then they over charge for pretty good food. But we'll pay it because of the service, quality and speed. They just do business the old fashion way and that is different.

My wife got shorted an order of fries once. A manager ran them over to the gym she was taking kids to for a basketball game to with two orders of fries and apologized. My wife was embarrassed but the manager insisted. LOL!

Whenever we are at a restaurant where the service is suffering, I try to make a comment just loud enough to be overheard, "Well, this isn't exactly a Chik-Fil-A. What do you expect?" LOL

You can opt for fried or grilled.

We pick up food there once a week.

But I was not pleased when they dropped coleslaw from their menu. :-(

Are you reading this, Chick-Fil-A? Bring back the coleslaw!

I make it a point to go to one if I am in a area where they are. Is there a word for the antonym of boycott?

Whoever is in charge of marketing or advertising at KFC needs to be axed.

No family sits around at the table at 5pm anymore, eating a bucket of chicken and sides.

That's why KFC lost. They are stuck in the past, they have too many menu items and they're not catering to people on the go like Chick Fil A has done.

Chick-Fil-A actually started in 1946. Making liberal heads explode for almost 75 years. Great company, great food.

“...they dropped coleslaw from their menu.”

They stopped the pot pie too.

One of my kids worked there for two years. He even wore the cow suit. He was treated very well and gave excellent service.

Once a little boy broke his arm in the restaurant. My son dropped what he was doing, ran and grabbed his personal first aid kit from his truck because he knew what was in it and stabilized the arm so his mom could take him for treatment.

His boss stood behind and let my son do his thing. Boss was well qualified to step in but chose to let his employee do the job.

I want to support Chick-Fil-A but the local restaurant has two drive through lanes that wrap completely around the building, and they are always full.

Does anyone know where Burger King is ranked? I thought they (and maybe even Wendy’s)would be ranked above Chick-Fil-A.

There are a number of ways to rank chain restaurants. You can go by number of stores, which helps chains like Starbucks and Subway, which can operate a lot of smaller low-output locations at a profit. You can go by $ of goods sold, which benefits places that don't live off a dollar menu. You can even go by number of items served, like the McDonalds signs used to tout.

Last week was the first time I ever had Chickfila really flub my order, and not just forgetting the cookies we ordered.

And we’re there regularly, so that’s a very high level of quality.

I’m curious about per-store revenue. Chick-fil-A stores seem to be hopping all the time.
