I agree that here in the U.S. , distracted driving is a large cause of traffic collisions.
Driving above the speed limit is a common practice for many motorists. It’s also illegal behavior that vastly increases the risk of losing control of a vehicle and causing an accident.
1. There is a huge diversity of skill levels in licensed drivers. One guy can do 75 on a road all day long, and safely. Another can barely keep his car under control at the posted limit of 55, and just prays a car doesn’t pull in front of him, or a deer.
2. They are intentionally at least 10 mph lower than they need to be because it causes pretty much everyone to speed, allowing cops to be able to pull over any car they want if there is some other suspicion that they might have.
The thing about “illegal behavior” behind the wheel is that you are not so much breaking laws - You are breaking “rules”. Most infractions are not civil or criminal. They are “something else”. I just see them as suggestions, and when a cop disagrees about your decision, he fines you. It’s very much like a game to me.
The exception is the ones that ARE felony’s or misdemeanors. That is when you are actually “Breaking the law”. You can speed, but if you speed by too wide a margin, you’ll go to jail. That is when you’ve broken the law.
Even a small increase in speed can result in a much higher risk of being involved in a collision or other type of accident.
It has been found that higher speeds aren’t as dangerous as that one guy who refuses to go along. The accidents start happening as people encounter him and start shifting lanes to go around him. In the past “going with the flow” meant doing 65 in a 55. Today, however, on Long Island, going with the flow means going 75/80 in a 55...

Heh. The list speaks to why I never go to the doctor. Hiipa is supposed to be the “medical privacy” act, but I call it the “Government and health industry knows everything about you” act.
I use a fake SSN if they insist on one if I ever DO go to the doctor.
I moved to rural KY about 8 years ago. On the rural roads here as well as on I-65 I’m shocked at the number of one car accidents. People appear to have simply driven off the road. You never used to see that except for the wee hours Saturday and Sunday morning (i.e. drunk - hammered - driving or falling asleep at the wheel)
It’s amazing how dangerous it is when cars want to make a left turn as well. I don’t know if they even do driver’s ed any more. It’s like the driving test involves proving you can fog a mirror.
Distraction Regulation gets worse.
The most obvious is not.
Recent studies show that the most dangerous distracted driving are hands free driving because it occupies the driver’s mental state.
And the safest distraction is touching that mapping gadget right in front of your eyes while looking at the road.
But Govt regulators outlaw the safest while allowing the more dangerous habits, all because of appearance and control.
You cannot make this stuff up.
1. Cops don’t have to obey speed limits or other traffic laws because no cop will ever cite another cop. Ever heard of a citizen pulling a cop over for speeding? I haven’t, but I have seen cops traveling at dangerously high speeds with no sirens or lights.
2. Speed enforcement is the easiest to do since a cop can just sit somewhere beside the road monitoring his radar/vascar/whatever waiting for a target to come into view. It’s also the most profitable.
3. The most dangerous things drivers do rarely result in citations because the cop has to be right there to see it happen (unless there’s an accident). When the cop is manning a stationary speed trap, he is not out there watching for idiots doing stupid things.
I watched a youtube vidio of a ton of cops pulling people over for not stopping for a stopped bus with flashing lights and a stop sign out. They were waiting for the bus to stop and pulled people over IN FORCE. A lot of posters were giving kudos to the cops for “making it safe” for the kids.
The video was BS and I called the cops on making it MORE dangerous. Here’s why:
It was a wide four lane road with lots of traffic and the fact of the matter is that those (going the opposite direction) passing the school bus were in NO WAY causing a dangerous situation. However, the cops pulling everyone over DID cause a dangerous situation.
And not a single car stopped for the bus. There was no “safety” reason to. It was a money trap.
But here’s the rub. If people were to actually stop for the bus on a road like that one, it would almost certainly cause rear end accidents at a fairly regular rate. Coming to a complete stop on a road like that is asking to get hit.
And if you don’t believe me, just watch the video. Sometimes violating traffic laws is safer than obeying them:

That video is the epitome of traffic laws doing more harm than good.

I see roadside memorials all over the place on non-highways for people who were going to fast.
Being able to see through a keyhole with both eyes at the same time just like Prince Charles!

Right to privacy? Apnea is the one that does not belong. Sleep Apnea is very common and is only slightly a cause of driving accidents. The idea being that people are tired and may fall asleep. But both these statements are true. Other people fall asleep without Apnea in great numbers. And people with Apnea in great numbers don’t fall asleep behind the wheel. So this is simply a government over-reach and/or a lawyers dream.
