Attorney General William Barr has appointed a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection efforts targeting the Trump campaign were lawful and appropriate, a person familiar with the situation told Fox News on Monday evening.
John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, will conduct the inquiry, the source said. The move comes as the Trump administration has pushed for answers on why federal authorities conducted the surveillance as well as whether Democrats were the ones who improperly colluded with foreign actors.
Two sources told Fox News earlier today that Barr was serious and had assigned DOJ personnel to the probe. Durham is known as a hard-charging, bulldog prosecutor, Fox News is told.
Sources familiar with matter say the focus of the probe includes the pre-transition period prior to Nov. 7, 2016 including the use and initiation of informants, as well as potential Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) abuses.
Mr. Durhams probe will focus on whether the Justice Department lawfully collected intelligence on Trump campaign associates, according to both the New York Times and Associated Press, each citing sources familiar with the matter.
It is not clear what investigative powers Mr. Durham will have or whether Mr. Barr will authorize a team or budget. Special counsel Robert Mueller had a squad of roughly 20 people to conduct his investigation.
Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec did not immediately return a request for comment. Thomas Carson, a spokesman for Mr. Durham, declined to comment.
President Trump has long demanded the Justice Department look into whether the FBI spied on his campaign at the behest of the Obama administration. His calls have increased since Mr. Mueller concluded there was no evidence that the president or members of his campaign colluded with Russia.
Mr. Durhams probe is the third known investigation into FBI and Justice Department decisions surrounding the 2016 election. Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz is evaluating the Justice Departments wiretaps on former campaign associate Carter Page. And John Huber, the U.S. attorney in Utah, is also reviewing a surveillance warrant obtained by the FBI to spy on Mr. Page.
Mr. Horowitzs findings are expected to be released this month or next while the progress of Mr. Hubers probe has remained shrouded in mystery.
In addition, Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, has also pledged an aggressive committee investigation into the FBI and Justice Departments actions in 2016. He said the probe will target how the department was so in the tank for [Hillary] Clinton and hated Trumps guts.
The Durham probe is not a surprise as Mr. Barr signaled earlier this month that he had people in the department helping him examine intelligence actions related to the Trump campaign.
Mr. Durham, who was sworn in as U.S. attorney on February 22, has worked at the Justice Department since 1982 and has plenty of experience conducting high-level special investigations.
I dont think it will be Sessions 2.0
*************
Neither do I. To be another Sessions he’d have to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for two years.
That no show Utah US Attorney investigator John Huber assigned by Sessions to investigate Hillary who did not investigate anything, not a witness, not a document and just showed up to pick up his paycheck now needs to be fired and have his salary payments clawed back.
What task did Sessions assign to Durham?
Very soon...in the coming weeks...as early as next month...his report is near completion....
LOL
We don’t know yet................
I would suggest that you read Sun Tzus The Art of War and then Donald Trumps The Art of The Deal and recalculate. All war is deception, and President Trump knows what he is doing. Hang in there!
Any one appointed by Sessions cannot be trusted. Sessions was a Deep State plant from the get go. Nobody could be that passive in the face of such massive corruption — unless it was intentional.
Bump
Durham, unlike the IG, has the full power of the DOJ to blast the deep state to smithereens.
That’s like a nuclear weapon.
Does he dare use it?...........................
That's my thought too.
All war is deception, and President Trump knows what he is doing.

He has promised repeatedly to declassify the FISA docs yet that still hasn’t happened. He could have done it by now if he really wanted to. Something very curious about this. Not saying he doesn’t know what he’s doing; just wondering why he keeps deferring.
Nothing wrong with colluding with her.
I’m guessing he is using it as a “political weapon” for the 2020 “October Surprise” which I was hoping he wouldn’t have to stoop to that level and instead bring on the indictments as the fallout from that would easily win him the election of 2020, without having to as the liberals will call it a “cheap stunt”.
All that was acknowledged in the transcript of James Bakers closed door testimony is that USA Durham was conducting a criminal investigation into FBI leaks and that Baker was among the targets of his investigation. That hearing was in October, when Sessions was still AG, so Durham must have already been assigned to that task by Sessions.
What we dont know is whether AG Barr has broadened Durhams scope, or sharpened it, or if nothing has actually changed except for a calculated, public tightening of the screws. Every observable action provokes a reaction...
Thanks.
From Wikipedia:
Amid allegations that FBI informants James “Whitey” Bulger and Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi had corrupted their handlers, US Attorney General Janet Reno named Durham special prosecutor in 1999. He oversaw a task force of FBI agents brought in from other offices to investigate the Boston office’s handling of informants.[8]
In December 2000, Durham revealed secret FBI documents that convinced a judge to vacate the 1968 murder convictions of Enrico Tameleo, Joseph Salvati, Peter Limone and Louis Greco because they had been framed by the agency. In 2007, the documents helped Salvati, Limone, and the families of the two other men who had died in prison win a $101.7 million civil judgment against the government.[8]
In 2002, Durham helped secure the conviction of retired FBI agent John J. Connolly Jr., who was sentenced to 10 years in prison on federal racketeering charges for protecting Bulger and Flemmi from prosecution and warning Bulger to flee just before the gangster’s 1995 indictment.[8]
Durham’s task force also gathered evidence against retired FBI agent H. Paul Rico who was indicted in Oklahoma on state charges that he helped Bulger and Flemmi kill a Tulsa businessman in 1981. Rico died in 2004 before the case went to trial.[8]
Durham also led a series of high-profile prosecutions in Connecticut against the New England Mafia and corrupt politicians, including former governor John G. Rowland.[8]

Spygate is such a serious matter for the country the FISA docs should to be declassified and released without further delay because of their gravity and the urgency of cleaning up the government. The country needs to see exactly what happened, who was involved, how they did it, and how it was covered up. It needs to be exposed. Its too important to be used as a political weapon.
Just my humble opinion.
"He is best known for leading an inquiry into allegations that FBI agents and Boston police had ties with the mob and his appointment as special prosecutor regarding the 2005 CIA interrogation tapes destruction."
Utah, I can't think of a better location to investigate DC criminality (urp)
