Democrats Don’t Realize Most Americans Want Visa Overstays Deported

We could talk all day about illegal aliens coming into the country over the Mexican border (and we frequently do), but as we’ve discussed here before, that’s not the largest source of illegals in the United States. Larger numbers arrive here legally, at least initially, using various types of visas for students, tourists or seasonal workers. But when the Visas expire, they fail to leave and disappear into the interior. Oddly, that’s not the illegal immigrant population that draws the most public attention, but that doesn’t mean that voters don’t want the situation to be dealt with. Our Townhall colleague Timothy Meads reports on a new survey showing that Americans would like these visa overstays deported also.

A recent Rasmussen Reports poll finds that 62% of Likely US Voters want the United States government to deport individuals who overstay their visas and most believe the United States is too lenient on these issues.
According to the poll, which took place on April 30-May 1, 2019 via telephone and online survey of 1,000 US Likely Voters, found that “just 21% disagree, while 17% are not sure” with the idea that vias overstayers should be deported.
The same poll also found that, “51% say the government is not aggressive enough in finding those who have overstayed their visas and sending them home.”

This is yet more evidence of how badly most Democrats have overplayed their hands when it comes to illegal immigration and how out of step they are with the majority of voters. They do manage to get some traction when they talk about the challenges faced by “immigrants” (without getting specific) and focusing on the dreamers, but as soon as the conversation drifts away from that one small subset of illegal aliens, voters tune them out.

The wording of this poll is fairly straightforward also, leaving little room to fudge on the issue. They want the people overstaying their visas deported and they don’t think the government is “aggressive” enough in deporting them. Those numbers have to be music in Donald Trump’s ears.

Still, Democrats in blue states continue to swerve much further to the left. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is backing a new bill currently making its way through the legislature that would allow illegal aliens to obtain drivers licenses. But a Siena poll that was taken in March showed that 61% of New Yorkers are opposed to the plan. That’s not just conservatives, either. 45% of Democrats registered their opposition, along with a staggering 71% of independents. And remember… we’re talking about New York here, not Alabama or Mississippi.

Going into the next election cycle, the GOP needs to pick this ball up and run with it rather than being afraid to confront it. If they want to cut a deal for the Dreamers, sure… keep that on the table. But it’s clear that the Democrats have veered way too far to the left on issues of deportation, enforcement and special privileges for illegal aliens. And the left is vulnerable on this subject.

They realize it. But there are other issues at stake for some voters - specifically blacks. Democrats are the party of racial quotas and reparations. The GOP is not. These two buckets of goodies far outweigh immigration as an issue among blacks.
Blacks are way over-represented in the civil service, white collar and skilled blue collar jobs, relative to their IQ’s, where they have, on average, a 20 point IQ disadvantage relative to whites. Whites average 100, whereas blacks average 80. These IQ test results are mirrored on civil service tests, SAT’s and college graduation rates. If blacks had to compete on merit/ability alone, civil service jobs would probably be 99% non-black. As would white collar and skilled blue-collar jobs.
I think it’s perfectly rational for blacks to vote for the Democratic party until the GOP embraces reparations and racial preferences for blacks. However, if the GOP did embrace those policies, a good chunk of whites who currently support the Republican party, primarily because of its (mostly pro forma) opposition to special bennies for blacks, would bolt to the Democratic party or just stay home on election day.

It bothers me that the media tags Trump as a “racist”. What does this come from?

I think it comes from his enforcement of immigration laws. The media sees this as Hispanics crossing the Rio Grande coming to America. For the media, Hispanics are a “race”. If you don’t want people illegally crossing the border, you must be a “racist”.

I wish Trump would emphasize the aspect of Visa overstaying. A lot of those people are from Europe. It’s not racist if you deport someone to Ireland because they overstayed their visa.

I spoke with a young man recently, a college student from Syria. If anyone were to try and stay illegally you’d expect it to be him, as his country has been basically destroyed. (he told me he had not been able to contact his parents in over two years and did not know if they were alive, dead, in a refugee camp, etc.).

In a few months when his visa expires he is planning to obey the law and leave. He is seeking some other country besides Syria that would be willing to let him stay there.

If someone in his tough circumstances is not going to overstay there is really no excuse for anyone else.

Overstays are NOT the majority of illegals.

The problem is, we know almost the exact number of overstays, because they fill out an I-94 form upon their arrival, which is to be returned when they check out. If they aren’t returned in the required visa time, e.g., six months, we know they are still here.

It’s not 100% accurate because we use the airlines to collect them as the visitor checks in to fly home. Then weeks later they are sent to a government contractor who logs them in. Lots get lost in the process.

But you can’t compare them to the number of illegals who sneak across the border because nobody knows how many are sneaking across the border. They don’t fill out a form or card like the visa overstays. They jus sneak in.

So if you don’t know how many illegals are here after crossing the border, you can’t say that there are more overstays the border jumpers.

This is another democrat/media fake news story to make it look like there is no problem. It’s like Pew’s number of 11 million illegal aliens unchanged for the last 15 years that the MSM uses as bible truths.

I stood at the Frankfurt, Germany airport around seven years ago. In front of me (the border-exit point), two American ladies (both probably mid-20s)...had apparently been in Europe for six months (consecutive). The one and only visa that they used was a tourist visa....didn’t matter where they entered, they were about 90 days over the expiration. So the German border guy laid it out....they weren’t just leaving, they were going onto a bad-boy type database and would not be allowed back into Europe (not just Germany, but all of the EU) for a period of three years. Then he whipped out deportation paperwork (freaking them out...they already had the ticket in hand anyway). I stepped over to the next desk. Those two were going to be there at least 20 minutes while he filled out the deportation papers and then they could go and board their scheduled flight.
