The proposal would raise the annual registration fee to $1,000, more than 57 times the current amount of $17.50.
Illinois officials believe the legislation will raise $2.4 billion for future projects, the major one being roadway improvement, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The bill would also make things more expensive for residents who drive non-electric cars. The state's gas tax would go up 19 cents to 44 cents a gallon, fees for drivers licenses would double and the registration fee for non-electric vehicles would go up nearly 50% from $98 to $148.
Its outrageous, Tesla owner Nicoletta Skarlatos, 56, told the Chicago Tribune. I thought Illinois was progressive and would want to encourage EV (electric vehicle) ownership.
The reason for the extreme hikes are that electric vehicles don't provide the state any gas tax revenue. Electric vehicle companies Tesla and Rivian say they're against the legislation.

Taxing rich people.
Elon Musk obtained much of his money from the taxpayer and now he wants to protect the taxpayer?
Kinda hypocritical, aint it?
Just read your linked Forbes article. Time to renegotiate those pensions, like they do in the private sector.
A friend in Pennsylvania works for a “progressive” firm where he charges the car at work (for free); if necessary, he charges at home. He hasn’t paid a penny at a “charging station” - and never will.
When you see debates about whether or not TEXTS should be taxed, you realize this is just about squeezing people for just about every type of common behavior.
Why is it the more Democrat a State is, the higher the gas taxes and the worse the roads.
Half that is simple corruption, the other half is sheer stupidity.
For example: Today driving on I 95 in New Jersey in a rent-a-car I passed road construction removing toll booths. They have upgraded to computerized pay by licences plates.
Sounds good right? But wait, it has been Democrat designed
As you drive around the demolished Toll booths and pass under the bank of cameras there is a sign that says dial **826 to avoid penalties. Right at the lane change...
I juggled my phone and dialed and got a Welcome to plate pass pay, that is after the dial one for Spanish voice mail system...
The long winded message informed me to go ahead and drive, they got my licence number... then later went on to ask me if I wished to avoid penalties would I like a text message to instruct me on how to pay online... I said yes, and low and behold as I wove between the narrowed construction lanes lined with concrete barriers, I got a text message! How handy while driving in a “construction zone, all fines are doubled” area the next orange sign says.
If you read that text message it contains a handy clickable link to the pay online system website.
Not being a total fool I gave up at the text message recieved sound and decided to read the text later. Of course there was a Police Cruiser parked on the side of the road next to the do not drive while using a hand held phone sign to spot people who were using their phones as instructed at the last sign in the construction zone.
At a rest stop 20 minutes down the road in Connecticut, I dug out my phone and navigated through the website to the “driving arental car?” section and filled out the SEVEN PAGES OF FORMS to pay my $2 toll fee. Took me ten minutes. Glad I didn’t forget because last time I did not spot the Dial **856 sign and had to pay $50 bucks for being a delinquent toll payer.
You see, they decided that if you are not local it is not cost effective to look up your address and mail you the bill. Of course when I did not pay the non bill within 30 days from the due date the fine was $50 bucks. That it seems was cost effective to mail me.
So the toll itself is $2 bucks for the crappiest roads in the USA.
If you dont do what the dont tell you to do the fine is $50 bucks
If you do do what they tell you to do it can cost you $400 bucks and you can loose your licence. Truly the most do do choice is to follow their instructions.
Or,
They could reinstall the damned toll booths and complete their highway robbery in 15 seconds.
Welcome to Socialism.
They put in Express lanes for the politicians and wealthy class to bypass the bike lane slow down.
Democrats love demselves havin sum second class folks.
This is a progressive tax by definition, dear. A progressive tax is one that ensures that wealthy people pay more than poor people. Mission accomplished.
It makes sense, the only role of Tammany Hall style Demagogic Party single party rule is to crush necks under jack boots.
This complainer would be the Tesla owner who was given $6,000 of other people’s money to buy a car that the people from whom that money was confiscated can’t afford.
The government gives him your money to buy the car and he expects you to pay the taxes to maintain the roads that he drives it on. Nice scam.
A compassionate progressive. It would be funny if it was not so nauseating.
‘Leftist Logic’ — as in NONE
Not to worry, when the electric car owner sees the bill, after just a few years, for their Replacement Battery they will feel much more the fool for buying into the hype.
Hey, Skarlatos! How does it feel to be buttf*cked by your own “progressives”? Wanna say “Thank you guys, can I have another”?
You got what you voted for so sit on it.
Was going to mention the Ford angle but $73K is too much to pay for a hunk of metal and plastic for most of us.
It’s for the planet dontyaknow....all good things that already cost too much must be taxed at a higher rate ebcause those who buy them are willing to pay “a little extra” of that feel good money....
Passenger rail isn't happening in the US. That could be done, and effective, if the powers that be didn't like lots of money going to deep pocket construction companies that (sort of) maintain roads.
God Please!
no rail.
Noisy, limited and limiting
Buses. New ones are comfortable quiet and go where the people want to be.
This country is a country ready for a complex busing system run by private entities. Since anyone can purchase buses and put them on the road it is less prone to monopolies and poor service.
Buses are the future of mass transit.
This shouldn't bother them. The "benefit" to the planet should be worth the extra $1000, not to mention the satisfaction of showing the world that they care. They have chosen a vehicle that only exists as a hybrid, and is distinctive (ugly) enough that anyone who sees them will have no doubt that this is truly a "good person" who deserves admiration.
I wish that weren't so. For all the neglect and inconvenience, an AMTRAK journey from Cleveland to DC is wonderful. Getting commuters and long-distance travelers off the roads and on to rail would really help keeping roads less congested. Today in the US, passenger rail doesn't even have its own tracks....it depends on commercial users for access.
Look at the NE corridor. My experience in the DC/Baltimore segment is that rail is very efficient, quite comfortable (compared to busses or planes), and has a lot of scheduled trains. It can be done. One can't help but suspect that pols like keeping lots of construction deep-pocket interests happy with projects to (sort of) maintain the roads.
