The proposal would raise the annual registration fee to $1,000, more than 57 times the current amount of $17.50.
Illinois officials believe the legislation will raise $2.4 billion for future projects, the major one being roadway improvement, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The bill would also make things more expensive for residents who drive non-electric cars. The state's gas tax would go up 19 cents to 44 cents a gallon, fees for drivers licenses would double and the registration fee for non-electric vehicles would go up nearly 50% from $98 to $148.
Its outrageous, Tesla owner Nicoletta Skarlatos, 56, told the Chicago Tribune. I thought Illinois was progressive and would want to encourage EV (electric vehicle) ownership.
The reason for the extreme hikes are that electric vehicles don't provide the state any gas tax revenue. Electric vehicle companies Tesla and Rivian say they're against the legislation.

Have to keep financing their bloated pensions.

Yep...that’s what they do all right..raise your taxes
The Left wants you to finance their corrupt government any which way but loose including using “weather” as an excuse for more government.
We all know it isn’t about “weather” or “civil rights” or “equality”.
It is about ONE THING: MORE GOVERNMENT.
Lololol.... I could go on for hours.
Maybe they can start registering and charging bicycles too. Plenty of those on the road now.
It’s hilarious.
Especially since she’s blind to what’s happening.
Theres nothing stupid about paying road use taxes. Money to maintain roads has to come from somewhere, thats a pretty basic government function. If youre not paying it in gas tax, paying a road maintenance tax in another way is completely reasonable, even to conservatives, or should be.
Or do you expect them to get this benefit for free?
“It is “progressive”, Nikki. Choke on it.”
Good point.
I had to buy a licence plate for my bike when I was a kid. Fifty cents. Ohio, of course...
There are legitimate purposes for government and illegitimate purposes. Most of the federal and state governments activities are illegitimate - mostly increasing taxes and growing government to line their own pockets.
“Greed” isn’t as nearly a problem in the free market as it is in government.
Many folks buy these coal-burning cars just for the HOV lane stickers.
Electric car owners are naive to think the states are going to meekly give up the gas tax revenue.
They will render unto Caesar one way or the other. LOL
Connecticut new tax raising governor - Needless LaMont- wants to put tolls and raise gas tax, because the gas tax - which is SUPPOSED TO be used for Highway improvements - was put into the general fund... Why not stop screwing the taxpayers, Illinois (and Connecticut)?
This is a great idea to make sure electric vehicles will never become the norm. Not even if they come with a self-charging solar station and go 300 miles between charges.
I suppose they could place a 10 cent per mile tax on each e-vehicle but they would mean big brother having an electronic connection/tether to that car or motorcycle. Even dumb leftists aren’t too fond of that idea.
And Ford just bought 25% (IIRC) of Rivian. Rivian took a Ford F 250 and reengineered it...Ford was impressed. The SUV Rivian has is going to be good, too. 8 passengers...
Which doesn’t address my comments here in the slightest.
Your comment is road maintenance is a legit government function.
Fine. What you don’t address and are maybe blind to, is probably 80%+ of those taxes will go to corrupt government officials who will use it mostly for their own aggrandizement, upgrades and vacations.
It is a user tax and rightfully the road hog bicyclists will be next. We paid for all these great bike paths and I am stuck doing 8 mph up a hill because I must share the road. Well, it wont be long and politicians will have them share the load. And hubby and I used to be avid bicyclists, but not on 50 mph roads. We used the paths.
Sounds like she doesnt want to pay her fair share.
