Kim Jong Un calls for 'full combat posture'

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a "full combat posture" as state media yesterday released photos showing missiles being fired during a long-range strike drill conducted by Pyongyang.

The photos came a day after it tested two short-range missiles. Analysts said the regime may have developed a new missile that is easier to hide, harder to strike down and capable of hitting all of South Korea.

They are their own independent nation. That ended in 1953 (us telling them what to do), after we drafted their Constitution. But don’t worry. Under Abe, yes, Article 9 is defacto being recast, and it is only a matter of time that it will be re-written. There are new realities and Japan cannot rely on the US when to blow its own nose. They have close by fish to fry ASAP. I am sure the President would have it that way. And he said as much in the presidential debates (to the shock of many). But it is going that direction.

We would never get away with it. It has to be within the context of some overall large conflagration, not an outright exclusive “hit”. And of course, you must question, is his successors going to be better or WORSE than the Fat Bastard himself. This is not an easy issue.

Hopefully Trump doesn’t fall for a trap and get us into a war before the election. I could see the dems colluding with the Norks on this.

If I’m not mistaken you decided to stroll on in here and take a shot at someone then cry wolf. He didn’t “post to you.” Additionally NOTHING in this post of news and information would lend any simple minded person to think the poster is a never this or never that or whatever the term du jour is at present. I can’t tell what’s worse, a fanatical leftist ideaologue or someone that sees “never Trump” in every crack or crevice.

Further evidence on my post earlier that American Idol and Presidential elections should not comingle. I voted for Trump because he is a great American but I also don’t see “Never Trump” (such an infantile over used term) in every situation.

This is why I have long advocated for a space based , individual human targetable laser or particle beam weapons system , that could be used in specific cases , just like this . Call it Global Opposition Destroyer ( acro = G.O.D.)

zap....next?

I don’t think that is what he is saying. No.

I think the original poster is against Kim. I think he is against Trump, insofar as Trump is still civil with Kim.

He does not, it seems, believe Kim should be trusted.

I don’t know. However Trump and Kim, may have a connection.

Or maybe that is all in Trump’s imagination.

If you think Trump actually gets Kim, you may support his approach.

If you think he does not get Kim, maybe you agree with the original poster.

:)

NK can’t keep up a “war posture”. They don’t have the resources. They are basically Iraq without oil or food.

Xing Xing is sacrificing a pawn to test his opponent in this high stakes game of chess.

[So Kim’s meetings with SK and the summits with Trump were what then? ]

Trump is caricatured in the media as someone who will give the farm away. And Trump actually did meet Kim Jong-un with no pre-conditions, which is something no other US president had done.

The way Trump does things - it’s always give America’s serious adversaries (i.e. the nuclear-armed countries) face. You might be kicking them under the table, but always say nice things about them. He has made a point of praising Putin while doing really unfriendly things, like killing a few hundred Russian mercenaries* in Syria, providing weaponry to Ukraine that Obama had refused to do and exiting arms control treaties that the Russians had counted on flouting while Uncle Sam was constrained by them. He also praised Xi all last year while increasing the frequency of freedom of navigation ops* through Taiwan Strait and the China Seas, imposing tariffs on half of China’s exports and continued his effusive praise while imposing the latest 25% tariffs. These people think they are the only guys who can do flattery while sticking the shiv in. Trump has shown he’s fully capable of doing the same thing, the idea being to avoid making the disagreements into a clash of personalities. This is a clash of national interests, not individual personalities.

Trump met Kim because he thought Kim might be persuadable. I think he may have now concluded that Kim is not, which is why all of the blandishments on offer have now been withdrawn. We are no worse off than we were, but it’s clear that our choices are reduced to either a defensive one of building more missile defenses around North Korea (which also help against Chinese missiles), an offensive one of destroying NK’s nuclear and missile installations or some combo of the two. The likelihood is that a ground invasion of the North will draw in the PLA, and give it an excuse to annex North Korea, even if it’s simply South Korea that moves north of the 38th parallel, so this method of eliminating the threat from North Korea is likely out of the question. Not to mention the fact that a move north by the South could give China the excuse it needs to attempt what it failed to do in 1950 - conquer all of Korea.

* While Wagner Group personnel are technically mercenaries, I tend to think they’re more Russia’s way of saving face if the Syrian regime falls. It’s similar to the American Volunteer Group (aka Flying Tigers) assembled in 1941, prior to Pearl Harbor, to help the Nationalist Chinese keep the Imperial Japanese Army at bay.

** In Obama’s 8-year tenure, the Navy conducted 4 FONOPs. In Trump’s first year alone, the Navy conducted 6 FONOPs. In his second year so far, FONOPs have been a monthly thing. It would not surprise me if Trump had an entire CVBG eventually conducting a FONOP through the disputed Spratlys and Paracels, with the carrier screen passing through waters within the 12-mile limit that China claims as its own. One round of ordnance from the Chinese on these man-made islands and the installation ends up looking like the battered Russian mercenary unit in Syria.

I don’t think an assassination by itself is any guarantee of a reduced threat from North Korea. While the immediate aftermath in North Korea is likely to be bloody as a conflict over succession breaks out, to get a good outcome, you really need a determined leader in South Korea to invade and sweep the remnants of the regime out of power. Given the likelihood of Chinese intervention, I doubt the South wants to give Beijing an excuse to invade and annex the North.
