I don’t think an assassination by itself is any guarantee of a reduced threat from North Korea. While the immediate aftermath in North Korea is likely to be bloody as a conflict over succession breaks out, to get a good outcome, you really need a determined leader in South Korea to invade and sweep the remnants of the regime out of power. Given the likelihood of Chinese intervention, I doubt the South wants to give Beijing an excuse to invade and annex the North.
