Women and slaves, Aristotle believed, cannot be tragic heroes. Two millennia on, a tragic heroine is on Broadway, fashioned out of the living flesh and blood legend that is Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Hillary and Clinton bills itself as kind of a comedy. But given the way things turned out on the world stage, a middle-aged, flawed heroine in fleece and slippers shaking a metaphorical fist at fate, is pure tragedy.
Playwright Lucas Hnath's character is facing a very modern challenge. She is a woman trapped in a death spiral with her own meme and her spouse.
Hillary’s political career was surely defined by overt and casual misogyny but Hnath and Metcalf have created a female character with agency and flaws.
Hnath and Metcalf insist that it’s all art, but Hillary and Clinton gets a lot right about the real Hillary’s tragic flaw of a reach that surpassed her grasp.
The play opens with fictional Hillary musing about a parallel universe, one in which she can win.
Let’s imagine another dimension in which Hillary realizes her natural talents suit her for the procedural Byzantium of the U.S. Senate, to which the voters of New York sent her for a second term in 2006—after she promised she would not quit to run for president.
Imagine that she let someone else take the Democratic nomination. Imagine that a Democrat won in 2016. Imagine that said President appointed Hillary to one of the Supreme Court openings, from where she could exercise brain and heart without ever having to participate in the political circus again.
Instead, in this universe, six nights a week on Broadway, a fictional Hillary shakes her fist at the fates that made her want and not have.
As Real Hillary must do most nights a half hour’s drive north, in Chappaqua.

I think she’s going mad over her obsession with the presidency. What a poor, sad fool.
Who’s Afraid of Hillary Clinton?
Why, Bill, of course. And rightly so.
It seems a lot of people should have been very much more afraid.
But they got Arkancided.

I think they all do, it is just she is doing so in an endless public spectacle.
Hillary is just another busted idealist.
I do think she saw herself as a good person intent on solving the world’s problems.
She soon realized that she couldn’t solve the world’s problems.
And her anger took control.
So, what do you do when you realize that you’re not God?
You go the other way.
You want power and money.
Not to help people, but to help yourself.
“Screw these suckers! I’ll get mine! And nobody better get in my way!”
The smiling young girl from Illinois is now the angry old woman robbing Haitians and Libyans and showing utter indifference to the good Americans who died at Benghazi.
The flaw in most tragic heroes is not a terrible, screeching voice.
The only good that can now come from Hillary Clinton is the example she could be for the rest of the world.
She needs to be brought to justice.
There are billions of people on this planet who came to the realization that they are not God.
We can’t solve all the world’s problems.
But, we didn’t go the other way and intentionally hurt people.
We try to make things better where we are.
She lost her mind and lost her way.
Perhaps her little girl dreams of being important and a force for good can be realized as she goes to prison.
Imagine the example that would set.
How many people could be saved from a life of crime by her example?
She could finally be useful.
Great question. Why she is not in prison is disgusting.
Judging by what she has blatantly gotten away with over the years without fear of being held accountantable for said actions and deeds, I would say that every individual in a position of authority is afraid of Hillary Clinton.
Anyone with an ounce of character or self-respect wouldn’t whine to the world incessantly, about what is ‘owed’ to them.
I might be afraid....I might die laughing at Hillary. Of course, I might die laughing at the clowns running or die laughing at America’s Official Crackpot...
and Donald Trump. There is more then enough evidence to have her and her minions arrested for a variety of charges yet he does not do so.
His family was so poor they could only afford one vowel.
