San Francisco officials voted Tuesday to require brick-and-mortar retailers to take cash as payment, joining Philadelphia and New Jersey in banning a growing paperless practice that critics say discriminates against low-income people who may not have access to credit cards.
The vote by the Board of Supervisors was unanimous.

I see a lot of stores banning cash these days.
Gotta have lots of cash on hand in case some robber decides he needs it.
Interesting. I’ve never come across a cash only store.
I am fine with that. There are a lot of small restaurants and retail stores we frequent (not in SF) where we prefer not to charge.
I agree with this. Stopped clock.
Of course, the solution is for the store to simply install a machine that accepts cash into store credits.
So I wonder, SF - since ATM machine locations require an ATM card to enter, that certainly establishes permission for stores to do the same, right? Slide your government issued ID in for entry into the store, or your ATM/EBT card (oh gosh, wait, you mean poor people have paperless payment methods? Who knew?!?) or your cell phone...
San Francisco supports low income people. This is to say homeless people. This is to say people who openly poop on their streets.
They just dont get it. And they never will. Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Do liberals know any other tricks other than bans, mandates and lies?
I pay cash MOST of the time. At grocery stores etc. Why would I swipe my card and notify Uncle Sam / Big Brother where I go, what I buy etc..
Without cash, how am I supposed to buy little stuff
my wife doesnt know about?
...Not that I have anything to hide... much
My dad and I have eaten many times at a restaurant that only accepts cash. They have an ATM for people that don’t understand the sign.
It still says on cash, though with the exception of hair cuts I have not used cash in fifteen years, ‘legal tender for all debts public and private.’ If the baker’s gotta make a gay cake, you gotta take my money.
Of course, my social security card also says the SS number is not to be used for purposes of identification and we know how that goes.
With the exception of an embattled Trump, it’s fair to wonder if anybody enforces anything any more.
I prefer paying with cash. I don't like being tracked. However, I think the Amazon cashless store in SF is a good thing. The homeless can go shop somewhere else (thousands of other stores will take cash). My brother-in-law works at Walgreens in SF, and shoplifting is an out-of-control problem there. Thousands of dollars of merchandise walks out via black thieves, and he has been assaulted trying to stop them. Walgreens could solve the theft problem by going cashless.
At Amazon, you can't enter without setting up a digital account, and you're charged automatically for any merchandise that leaves the store with you.
Then dont go to businesses that dont take cash. It isnt the governments role to require businesses to take cash for your convenience. If a business wants to go cashless to deter robberies, for one reason, that should be the businesss choice.
I'll let you know when I encounter one in person.
By the way, I never said I would frequent a place that didn't take cash. I just know (from my wife's experience in banking) that it is preferable if the establishment is small and offers a choice of cash or charge, 99% of the time we will use cash.
Legal tender doesnt mean what you think it means. A present sale of goods and services isnt a debt to be discharged by tender, and a business has no obligation to sell to you if you are unwilling or unable to pay in the form it requires.
Hmmm, that didn't come out the way I wanted it to. I think "would" should be "wouldn't". Three negatives in a sentence. Sheesh!
Everybody with a history of being responsible with their finances, and pays their bills has access to credit cards. I got my first card when I was in college. I was not even remotely doing the McScrooge rolling on a bed of dough. Low limit and high interest to start,l.
I am surprised this is happening in CA though as cash transactions are harder to track
a gym (national chain) i belong to won’t accept cash or check, only credit debit cards.
