Mayor Pete Buttigieg's Unlikely, Untested, Unprecedented Presidential Campaign [TIME cover story]
Time ^ | 5/2/19 | Charlotte Alter

Their marriage is at once banal and extraordinary, infused with the exuberant contentment of two people who once thought they would always be alone. Chasten handles the dogs, the shopping, the cooking. Pete does the dishes, laundry and garbage. Chasten hates taking the bin out to the curb. Pete hates the way Chasten folds T-shirts. Chasten gets grumpy when they go too long without food, and Pete doesn’t get it. “You’re like, ‘Oh, here, I packed a bag of almonds and a thing of beef jerky,’” Chasten says. “I hate nuts, and he eats nuts all the time.”

“High in protein, good for you,” Pete counters.

“See!” Chasten says. “I want a meal, and he’s like, ‘We’ll just have a handful of nuts.’” Also, he tells his husband, “You do chew really loudly.”

Both men grew up closeted in conservative Midwestern communities. “Being gay was not culturally acceptable where I grew up, mostly for a lack of understanding,” Chasten says. “And so my family and I were just at a crossroads, and we didn’t really know how to talk to one another.” When he came out after his senior year of high school, tensions at home forced him to spend months crashing on friends’ couches and sleeping in his car. His parents ultimately changed their minds, welcomed him back home and now fully support their son and his marriage.

So how was it popular and normative for so long and then could be pretty much squelched and forced literally into a closet for 1500 years?

Because something is "acceptable" doesn't mean it's "normative" or "normal" or "natural".

Look around.

I don’t care one whit about his sexuality, I do care that the only thing all the news stories ever cover is his sexuality and his folksy charm, as if being homosexual and not showing up to work carrying a candelabra dressed in sequins is some sort of superpower.

If the MSM were serious about treating him like a real candidate and not some profile raising human interest sideshow, they’d stop calling him ‘Mayor Pete’ and pushing the actual pronunciation of his last name, which is kind of important if he’s ever going to be more than ‘Mayor’.

What a laugh! If “rightwing” sources wrote of those two packing beef jerky and liking nuts, the leftwing media would have been screaming about homophobic slander and dog-whistles.

The discussion of nuts and a “thing” of beef jerky is as creepy as Slow-Joe sniffy hair.

If this was all so terribly normal, Time wouldn’t be doing a feature article about it proclaiming it to be all so terribly normal.

It’s been my experience that the most virulently anti-gay demographic groups are black and Hispanic men. Which also are two of the major demographic groups that democrats must have come out and vote in droves it they want any chance of winning in 2020. While I doubt black and Hispanic men will jump aboard the Trump train, they might very likely just sit home on election day (which will destroy democrats down ballot as well). Either way I don’t see much enthusiasm for “a homosexual “cracker” and his husband”....

BARF ALERT! They can try to sell these two as a modern day Desi and Lucy but it is not going to work. As for him not liking nuts.... well....

No kidding. Everything I read in his praise seems to have some double entendres, sort of sticking it to the offended.

My Navy sailor mind suggests a comment to make but my common sense tells me that if I make it I will be banned.

So I leave with this....Romans chapter 1.

roughly from 500BC to 500 AD it was acceptable and normative first among the Greeks and then across the entire Mediterranean as a result of the growth of the Roman Empire.

From what I have read, homosexuality was not "normal" to the Romans (as it was to the Greeks). Sure it existed in Rome, but it was regarded as a vice. And even for the Greeks, it was not a replacement for normal heterosexual couplings to produce families.
