The Pogroms: Prelude to the Holocaust

Most people have no idea about the runup to the Holocaust or the antecedent cultural, religious, and socioeconomic circumstances which the Jewish people have suffered for centuries. Most have heard of anti-Semitism but few if any, even amongst Jews themselves, recognize that the Holocaust did not occur in a vacuum or that European anti-Semitism wasn’t invented in Germany.

Over the centuries, during good times the Jews of Europe were tolerated and in some cases even allowed to rise to positions of power. But rarely if ever were accepted as equal citizens in a host country.

Amid times of woe, which were more often than not, they became victims of persecution and in many cases mass murder. Stateless people from time immemorial, Jews have been prey for xenophobic populations throughout Europe. Often these riots or pogroms as they became known were precipitated for a myriad of reasons:

The month of April, when Easter and Passover are typically celebrated have been a particularly vexing time for Jews. Religious passions ran particularly high during this time of year.

“Exodus”, Leon Uris (1958)...a far better book than the movie ever was.

...And all the associated AntiFa/SJW and so-called “progressives” have been quite eager to “get with the pogrom”, as it were.

The fact that Israeli Apartheid Week/Boycott Divest Sanction are the single biggest progressive sacred cow on college campuses these days is proof positive of that. Likewise every YouTube comment thread, where inevitably the triple parentheses start to appear in the comments, i.e.: (((Media))) (((Hollywood))) (((Bankers))) and (((Lawyers))), and folks start to spew the old House of Rothschild conspiracy theories.

Not just that, but right here on this very board on an almost daily basis, you see the new pogroms going on.

Let’s see... The last person I personally took to task told me that I needed to remember to “not piss off the goys”.

Stateless people from time immemorial

That has got to be one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read here.

Am I the only person in the world who has heard of the ancient Israelites???

Among the reasons given by anti-Semites: the Jews had no loyalty to any country, only to their faith and their brethren. Oddly, this never applies to muslims.

Catholics get that same charge. When JFK ran for President, many questioned if he would be more loyal to The Vatican than to the US.

True, but without the movie we'd have had none of that Golden music.

The nation-state we know today only dates to the Middle Ages.

Previous empires, kingdoms, etc, always accused whoever was determined to be outsiders to be of doubtful loyalty.

Most outside groups disappeared through assimilation or murder. Jews are unusual because they actually survived numerous attempts to erase their uniqueness.

Stopped reading right there. Basic history ignored(or ignorance of) is a major issue in the world today.

I think when Al Smith (the first Catholic nominee for President) lost in 1928, he announced that he had sent a one-word telegram to the pope: "Unpack."

Of course he was mocking those who had voted against him because they thought he would take orders from the Vatican. Hoover carried some normally-Democratic states in 1928 because of Smith's religion.

I read it some fifty years ago when I was a teenager. It shapes my view of midddle-east matters to this day.
