As Avengers: Endgame continues its world-conquering run at the box office, one particular scene is attracting some attention for introducing the franchises first openly gay character. And while some fans are pleased to see the MCU finally take this first step in LGBTQ representation, others were left feeling pretty underwhelmed.
The character in question features in a scene where Steve Rogers leads a post-snap support group. One of the attendees, played by Endgame co-director Joe Russo, mentions that he went on his first date since the events of Avengers: Infinity War, using the he pronoun to refer to his partner. In that moment, Endgame becomes the first Marvel movie to acknowledge that gay people exist in the cinematic universe. The problem is that this first example of an LGBTQ character is almost completely inconsequential, getting only one scene, a few lines and no name.
Though some will argue that this one minor character is better than nothing, his inclusion also feels like too small of a baby step to seem especially brave or groundbreaking in 2019. And the fact that Joe Russo emphasized this moment by playing the character himself has struck some fans as unduly self-congratulatory, not least when Marvel TV shows like Jessica Jones, Runaways and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have already introduced multiple queer characters with far more prominent roles.
In any case, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has repeatedly hinted that a greater level of LGBTQ representation is coming to the MCU, and just last month, executive vice president of production Victoria Alonso claimed that the world is ready for the franchises first gay superhero. Clearly, Avengers: Endgame wasnt considered the right film to follow through on this tease, though if recent reports are anything to go by, then perhaps Russos unnamed character could be considered a stepping stone for whats to come in The Eternals.
I used to want to be an actor. Now I think if I were to become one I would be required to do a gay scene, reject it, and then never work again.
You wait. In 5 years there will be no sick as a man in Hollywood who hasn’t done a gay scene. Except Deniro. He gets a pass.
My wife saw the flick today and liked it.
I stayed home laid up with sprained ankles. I found the Cannon pilot movie and some Sandbaggers reruns on YouTube. I’ll stick with those.
The toothpaste is out of the tube and its becoming boring to me to make such a big deal about it either way. Make every character gay, or every show with 2.3 gay characters, it starts to look ridiculous. Make sure there are no gay characters, it looks prejudiced. Just lets fuggedaboudit and sprinkle all kinds of people around all entertainment without so much focus. Who cares?
Honestly as childish(and perhaps as loathsome a person) as this’ll make me sound had I noticed this as I watching it it likely would driven me insane and instead of being engaged in the plot and being taken in by the heartfelt moments more than likely all throughout the movie instead I would have been to myself “They did it! They actually it! They had to do it in this of all the movies they had to push their SJW agenda!”.
They already make male actors cross-dress at some point in their career.
Rebuilding, probably not. But they’ll want to be sure it’s tastefully done...
Its actually less tha 2% of the population, but they are about 30% or more of hollywood
That’s something that most black actors have to do.. I never figured that one out.
It’s a disease and is infecting EVERYTHING!
Yawn.
So glad I never got wrapped up in that silliness.
A small and select minority of fans - but the only ones they will acknowledge.
Same here. Phase IV, Disney/Marvel will go Solo, and go solo as far as I am concerned.
As it is, I note they turned the noble, majestic white male God of Thunder into a blubbering, blubberous God of Blunder.
They would never have done that to a non-white or a female hero - especially not a top-tier one.
I can not watch any of the DC television shows because the LGBT agenda crops up every time, pissing me off while sickening my stomach. Their “enlightening” spreads to the comic books themselves, so yes they are purposely targeting the youth with their sinfulness.
1%.
1%.
They have to ruin everything every thing and then they wonder why people cant stand them?
