In 1968, the years most important book, what Greg Garrard[1] called a neo-Malthusian classic, The Population Bomb, by Stanford University Professor Paul Ehrlich, made dire predictions and triggered a wave of repression around the world.[2] Authored by an evolutionary biologist known for his groundbreaking studies of the co-evolution of flowering plants and butterflies, it became a best seller, and turned the author into a celebrity.[3] The book would become one of the most influential books of the 20th century.[4]

And by the way, if Darwin had died before ‘On the Origin of Species’ had gone to press, Lord Alfred Russel Wallace would have published essentially the exact same theory based on independent research conducted in a different part of the world from his study of different life forms.
"Demographic transition" --- stabilization of the population ---has historically shown up in every country when it goes from high birth rates and high death rates to low birth rates and low death rates. People in industrial-revolution Europe and the USA largely achieved transition in the 19th century, simply by increasing female (private) education, delaying marriage and childbearing, extending breastfeeding, and modifying sexual behavior. Historically, this transition occurred before there was either free, compulsory schooling, comprehensive welfare spending, or widespread contraception.
The best-ever slogan is this:
"When people take care of themselves, the population takes care of itself."
