Armed teachers can save student lives – Don’t leave children defenseless against school shooters
Fox News ^ | April 26, 2019 | John R. Lott, Jr.

Change is slowly coming across America. For example, a growing number of states and school districts are coming to the commonsense conclusion that we should not leave our children unprotected and defenseless in their schools.

"No school employee would be required to carry a gun in either state. Only volunteers would participate in the initiative designed to make schools more secure in the event of an armed attack."

Fair enough but must be combined with "school choice" so parents who care about the safety of their children can easily move them to schools who also care about the safety of their children.

The Left considers their lives expendable, and the loss acceptable if it will bring the end of the Second Amendment closer to reality.

Tell that to the 30 states that allow it. It’s in the article.

You realize that the vast majority of these ‘teachers’ who get the firearms have already killed their own children in the womb, and/or will openly fight tooth and nail for the ‘right’ for a mother to do the same?

They are already poisoning the minds of children with indoctrination and child abuse on a daily basis.

And you think these same people can be trusted to protect these kids during this kind of emergency?

This increase has occurred entirely among schools that don’t let teachers carry guns.

The schools that allow armed techers need BIG stickers on every entrance door. Instead of saying "NO Guns, safe space" They need to say "This school has armed teachers and armed resource officers for the students protection". In just a few years the proof will be in the pudding. The only school shootings by cowards will occur in schools that advertise no guns.

In 40 years of teaching in NY public and Catholic schools I can count 12 teachers I worked with in 40 years I would trust to use a weapon and I was not one of them. Five were Nam vets, three Army reserves, two peacetime Marines and one peacetime Ranger. Anyone else was a greater danger with a weapon. That was in a time, say 20 of those 40 years when men were 40% to 60% of JHS and HS staff. Now it’s like 25%. Maybe parts of the nation differ but in NY, no way this works. As for arming the school security? Two guys I would have trusted and one of them was a 60 year old guy who’d humped a BAR up and down the hills of Korea in 51.

If the 6 or 8 dead adults at Sandy Hook could have a do-over, I’d bet they would have rather had a gun of their own to face down Adam Lanza.

Yup. I have a little different perspective, having been involved in a school shooting [.50 Browning machinegun] when I was around 10. It was ended by armed Marines without another shot being fired.

Likewise, in the 1920's when armed robberies of US Postal facilities resulted in several mass murders (in a day when cash moved mostly by mail, and not mamy trusted banks, with good reason) armed Marines accompanied the mail, and the robberies came to a screeching halt:

In 1921, President Harding sent a terse letter to the Secretary of the Navy, Mr. Denby:

My Dear Mr. Secretary:

You will detail as guards for the United States Mails a sufficient number of officers and men of the United States Marine Corps to protect the mails from depredations by robbers and bandits.

You will confer with the Postmaster General as to the details, and will issue the necessary instructions in regard to the performance of this duty.

Very truly yours,

Warren G. Harding

The orders to the Marines were given: in a 'circular letter', "Subject: Miscellaneous Instructions, dated 13 December 1921, from The Major General Commandant....

1. In cases where trains carrying Marines guarding mails cross the Canadian Boundry enroute to another point in the United States, the Marines, upon crossing the boundary, shall place their arms in a registered mail-sack and turn over the sack to Canadian Post Office Officials (who accompany the train) until such time as the train re-crosses into the United States. Under no circumstances shall Marines exercise a military function in Canadian teritory.

2. Shotguns preferably will be carried with filled magazine and empty chamber, in order to avoid accidents.

3. Pistols may be carried loaded, cocked and locked. The holster should be fastened to the leg and the flap tucked or tied back, so as not to interfere with drawing. The Marine (if not carrying other arms) should carry his hand on the pistol butt.

4. Arrangements should be made for each mail-coach to carry a supply of ordinary railroad flares, which should be ignited and thrown out of the car if an attack is made on it. Also, in case of attack on a car, interior lights should be put out. On trains lighted with electricity the guard should be prepared to turn out all lights.

5. The Marines should be continually reminded that they will use their firearms to wound or kill only when necessary to prevent robbery or theft of the mails. The use of firearms except for this purpose must be avoided.

6. Where it is decided to convene a summary court-martial and a shortage of officers exists, a request may be made on the local Recruiting Officer for one or more officers to report for this temporary duty. When they report, the Commanding Officer may order them as members of the Court-Martial. In such cases, the officer or officers requested should be junior to the officer ordering the court. 7. Cases have arisen where men have been transferred to barracks without punishment for the offense which caused their transfer. Except in cases serious enough to warrant trial by General Court-Martial, men should be tried, before transfer, by a Deck Court or Summary Court-Martial, as it will be impracticable to bring them to trial after transfer. Men committing offenses warranting a general court-martial should be held at their station until a decision in the premises has been received from Headquarters.

8. The official title of the Detachments is --U.S. Marine Corps Detached Guard Company ( Place ). For instance, "U.S. MARINE CORPS DETACHED GUARD COMPANY, WASHINGTON, D.C.". Hereafter no other title will be used.

9. Commanding Officers must take steps to provide a suitable Christmas and New Years for their commands. No doubt much can be done for their entertainment by enlisting the good offices of local welfare organizations.

10. Precious orders regarding transfer, for discharge of men from U.S. Marine Corps Detached Guard Companies to nearest Recruiting Office or Barracks, are rescinded. Hereafter Commanding Officers of U.S. Marine Corps Detached Guard Companies will discharge their men in the same manner as any other Commanding Officer.

(signed) LOGAN FELAND
by direction"

They ended the guard service in 1922. Another murder-robbery of a mail truck in New Jersey in 1925 caused the Marines to ride the mail trains and Postal trucks again until February of 1927.

In all the time the Marines had been guarding the mail, there had been only one successful mail robbery, of a truck with no Marine guard on board, and one circumstance in which a Marine fired his weapon- justifiably.

When we had a local conference on *school security* I was invited, being the only local who had actually been involved in one. I brought up four examples; the *experts* weren't familiar with any of them. And wghen I suggested they pay school guards at a Marine PFCs salary instead of a cop's $72,000 a year, plus take-home car and retirement, the cops really got testy.

But not a one would do it for a Marine's wages....

I can handle a rifle on a range with some talent, but I have no confidence in my ability to use a handgun in the midst of a 1000 kids in a chaotic situation. That requires not only training but mindset. If it were my home and knowing where everyone was I am confident I could use a 12 gauge or a lever action carbine to good effect, but a school situation is different. While writing this I recollect one other guy I would be confident in. A substitute teacher who owned a liquor store in Flushing who had a CCP. He actually prevented with an off duty NYPD detective, a bank holdup in Flushing. He brought in the security footage. Many years back as the footage was sequential stills. But he wounded one of the three perps. The cop killed another and the third guy fled.
