Former Massachusetts Gov. William “Bill” Weld announced Monday he is running against President Trump for the Republican nomination for president.
Weld revealed that he formed a presidential exploratory committee back in February, but Monday’s announcement makes his intra-party challenge official.
“In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their ‘win at all cost’ battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering,” Weld said in a statement provided to the Washington Examiner. “ … It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln – equality, dignity, and opportunity for all."
He added: "There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great."
Weld, 73, is the first major Republican challenger to Trump’s presidency. He was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as a U.S. attorney and served in that role from 1981 to 1986. Weld served for the following two years as the U.S. assistant attorney general for the criminal division under Reagan.

Weld was the Libertarian Party nominee for Vice President in 2016.
During the 2016 campaign, Weld publicly stated he would vote for Hillary Clinton if he was not on the Libertarian ticket.
Good. This means debates featuring Trump who will dominate and get to mock the Democrat media flea circus primary going on at the same time.
This is just to distract Trump so he can’t focus on the Democrats from the beginning.

Impressive.
But, it gives him cover to collect money from people who want him to use his connections to influence government decisions on various levels - legitimizing his graft and giving MSNBC viewers little "intra-party strife!" woodies now that impeachment has left them limp.

It was an expression of fear that in states that allow cross over voting in the primaries, that Democrat saboteurs could vote in significant numbers with never Trumper types to deny Trump the nomination for president. The Dems hated Reagan in the eighties and did all kinds of histrionic crap to him. I’m not in the eighties but the Dems are.... and they are just as nongrownup and vicious as ever.
