Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Browns Da Vinci Code thriller, caught fire in March.

The cathedral was functioning in the early 19th century, but was half-ruined inside and battered without.
During the liberation of Paris in August 1944, the cathedral suffered some minor damage from stray bullets. Some of the medieval glass was damaged, and was replaced by glass with modern abstract designs. On August 26, a special mass was held in the cathedral to celebrate the liberation of Paris from the Germans; it was attended by General Charles De Gaulle and General Philippe Leclerc.
In 1963, on the initiative of culture minister André Malraux and to mark the 800th anniversary of the Cathedral, the facade was cleaned of the centuries of soot and grime, restoring it to its original off-white color.[15]
Stones damaged by air pollution were replaced, and a discreet system of electrical wires, not visible from below, was installed on the roof to deter pigeons. Another major cleaning and restoration program was commenced in 1991.
On April 15, 2019 at 18:50, the cathedral caught fire.[9][8]
Coming soon, following cleanup: The Notre Dame Mosque!
Re: 15 - Dont waste your breath. The shoot from the hip without facts crowd have made their mark on this thread.
If you have been following events in France, you know the French have been awake for a long time. There is a virtual civil war going on. Marine Le Pen has been sounding the alarm for decades.
Just heard the spire has fallen
OMG
I walked up that spire to reach the roof
Has His Popeness chimed in with some banal inanity yet? Like “I condemn this...sort of”.
In the United States, arson of black churches was common in the south around the 1960s during the civil rights struggles.[1] Arson continued to proliferate, especially in the 1990s, damaging many black churches. As a result, Congress passed the Church Arson Prevention Act in 1996. In addition, President Bill Clinton formed the National Church Arson Task Force due to the sharp increase in church arson.[2] The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was created as a division of the Treasury Department in 1972 to investigate arson (it is now a part of the Department of Justice).[3] -—WIKI
Why would they not use water?
That’s the group I would suspect. And yes, they are gonna lie about it to stop unrest.
This is stunning to watch. The SPIRE! It is as though we’re watching Western civilization burn.
Infuriating. Heartbreaking.
The moslem zoning commission condemned the property as an eyesore.

Will this suffice?
Will the pope say global warming caused it?
Who is carrying out the renovations? All it takes is a disgruntled worker or workers to set it ablaze. I fear we will never know the cause, especially if it was a religious attack. It would be too explosive politically and could set off large scale civil disorder.
I know how upset you are, nutmeg. I, too, have visited both churches several times. Notre Dame, to me, is one of the glories of western civilization and to see it reduced to ashes is such a symbol of our collapse. I wouldn’t be surprised if muzzies were recruited to work on the cathedral in order to show we Catholics aren’t “prejudiced”!
THE Crown of Thorns??? The nearly 2000-year-old crown that rested on Jesus's head??? If that's for real, that is AMAZING!!!
This is a priceless treasure of western civilization. I've been there many times.
Churches have burned before, and been rebuilt.
My prayer is the French people will be inspired to rebuild Notre Dame better than it was before. Perhaps it's God's Way of waking them up.
The tragedy is if the church isnt rebuilt.
