Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Browns Da Vinci Code thriller, caught fire in March.

Sadly, you are spot on.
Notre Dame is gone. Forever.
The guy I heard, if it’s the same one, was ranting about feces being smeared on something or other. I’m surprised he didn’t start off with, “Hey, Cavuto. I’m a long time listener, first time caller!”
Do you know if a fire of this sort can be so hot that it might make the stone parts unstable for future use, as foundation and walls of a rebuild?
notice size of people on the bridge at bottom of photo.
Both Shep and Cavuto are treading very softly. They saw what happened to Judge Jeanine when she just wanted to start a conversation on that Muslim Congresswoman regarding whether the Muslims can support the US Constitution. Must not show that the emperor has not clothes!
I saw the fire at the towers burning when they first aired the cathedral itself on fire. I doubt any of it will be saved including the towers still burning.
I think it was more like a hour. The crowds supposedly got in the way, which sounds like BS to me. Now the fire fighters are saying they were there at the start, helping the people in the building get out of it. Apparently a river runs right through the complex, ironically.
Doesn’t look like they’re going to be able to save any of the rest of it, either.
Total destruction.
EXCELLENT PHOTO!
Well that was a fast assessment.... we have muslims here too so are our fires started that way? You jump far too quick
It really takes up almost all of the Ile de la cite. I remember buying gelato right next to it about ten years ago and remember how it loomed over the area.
Apparently renovation goes on there all the time, so timing the fire for renovation seems dubious.
The mortar between the stone can be eroded, like mortar on a brick house needs pointing over time. The hear of this blaze couldcause rapid mortar deterioration. Fires I have seen in NYC involving 100+ year old stone and brick buildings have seen the walls collapse even when there was no woodframing. So, yeah even the bell towers could go if the Frogs can’t get a handle on this.
and just like that a major piece of Western Civilization is gone.
Very, very sad day...
My husband said the same earlier re: some heads will roll over this. Glad to hear Macron is getting it on Twitter!
In less than five minutes a modern day living room has temperature over 1000 degrees.
The flashover point was incredible to watch.
With a building as old as Notre Dame I can only imagine the fire load.
A fire extinguisher would only be useful if you were right there when it started.
It is ISLAMIC JIHAD during Holy Week!
Shep had all the usual poetic drama.....gawd he gets so surgery thick you can practically see it drop off his lips. Can’t stand the guy! I finally shifted to France 24 live.
