Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Browns Da Vinci Code thriller, caught fire in March.

They said they were afraid the water would damage the art works on the ground floor. Not a good reason, because they could all be restored if there was water damage, but they cant be restored if they have now been burned into ashes.
Is Mecca wide open for a terrestrial visitor?
Having been in two fires in my life that got out of control, I can see how it can happen and once it gets the upper hand, you are SOL.
It is a frightening feeling to experience, that moment where you realize there is nothing you can do to stop it, and you are going to need help which is not immediately there.
It makes you feel pretty small.
Looking at all the scaffolding on the building, a thought just occurred to me. When a job like this is undertaken, why can’t some fire fighting equipment be installed on the scaffolding so IF this happens, water could still be used from a position where humans couldn’t get to due to unsafe conditions. And have them remote controllable so water could be swept over wide swaths. Sort of like a huge version of what’s inside buildings to suppress fire. Might be cost prohibitive but a job of this magnitude should overlook that. Just my .02¢.
Timing too good since it can be blamed on renovations when they did something so struck and scored bonus Easter Bunny boiling in a pot.
Humboldt palace in Berlin, which was destroyed in 1945 by allied bombing is just about nearing completion. And it didn’t exist for nearly 70 years. It looks exactly like the old one.

I think that its not a coincidence that it started when it did, at the beginning of Holy Week. And I think the authors of the crime (because theres no way this was an accident, although the French government will say it was) didnt want to get bad press for killing a bunch of tourists.
Ive been there often, and theres an evening mass, attended by about 50 people usually, and whoever was there would obviously be able to get out in time.
So they didnt want to get bad press by killing tourists or even daily mass attenders, and went for something that would destroy the structure, which is - whether you are Catholic or Protestant - symbolic of Christianity in Europe.
The fire brigade will be there soon!!

It is truly amazing how quickly gasoline spreads flames. It is uncontrollable even if the fire department had shown up.
That is a great twitter thread. I remove my previous comments about the firefighting. The experts have spoken, and my thoughts were too novice for this type of situation. Sorry if I offended anyone....should have known better.
It’s not an outlandish idea. Nor an expensive one.
Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if some islamic terrorist did this. The timing is too convenient. The official reasons for the fire, far from convincing.
This is the guy with a photo he claims is from about an hour before the fire with two guys up top
Maybe a coincidence. I’ll reserve the right to extreme skepticism until proven this was an accident. Sickening to see the savages on social media celebrating this.
