Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Browns Da Vinci Code thriller, caught fire in March.

The Paris Fire Brigade (French Army) renowned fire fighting skills will be put to the task fighting this fire.
I think the fire won.
I don’t know what the water availability was inside the building, but it seemed to take an hour for the fire department to find a way to get their spray up to 300 feet. They finally ended up on top of parts of nearby buildings before they could start spraying effectively, or at least getting water on the fire. Frankly it didn’t look all that effective.
One hopeful reason for that is to protect the covert police operations going on at this moment.
In the USA, the mayor of Oakland would tip off the perps that the Feds are coming after them, if Congressional Democrats didn't demand release of the information first.

No deaths reported as investigators look into cause.
When I was stationed in Germany I was near the French border and went to Paris many times. Been all over this beautiful cathedral. Walked the spiral staircase almost to the top. It is truly one of the most beautiful churches in the world, the location of many priceless Christian artifacts. This is the work of Muslims. No doubt in my mind. They know its Holy Week. The Vatican had better beef up its security or the same thing could happen there.

Sheps an idiot. Its a 1905 law that puts churches ownership to the state. The Church is the beneficiary in perpetuity.
The same was said about buildings throughout Germany in 1945. Yet many were rebuilt. It will not be the original, true enough. But how much you wanna bet they’re gonna do it anyway, as a sign of perserverance, or just plain cussedness?

Can firemen surrender?
I’m sick to my stomach. The loss of its beauty, its testimony to faith.
Between the Muslim takeover of Paris, the Yellow Vest protests, and, if this is a construction accident, the pure incompetence, I don’t know what to think.
Another nail in the coffin of the decline of Western Civilization.
Something like this happens and we become the cowboy who ran out onto the porch, jumped on his horse, and rode off in all directions at once. Each direction its own conspiracy theory. Bah.
Le Depot de Home - rofl!
They do have a builders store chain called DIY. Pronounced when I was there, Dooeeet.
Half of the workforce is probably Muslim.
Reims Cathedral was destroyed during WWI and largely rebuilt by the late 30’s.
Omg, how utterly disgusting.
Frankly if Jews were changing their twitter profile pics to add laughing faces because a beautiful 800 year old cathedral was burning, Id feel personally responsible and expect to be treated with prejudice. Muslims everywhere need to stand up ASAP against this jubilation over this.
This an horrific loss to Western Civilization, just the sort of nihilism Moose Limbs desire.
This photo is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal isn’t it?
ONE WEEK before Easter. WHAT A COINCIDENCE, NOT!
Fire started 5 minutes AFTER closing. WHO was the last "tourist" out the building.. Was his name MOHAMMED?
