U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat running for president in 2020, delivered donuts and coffee to picketing Stop & Shop workers in Somerville on Friday, and urged shoppers to take their business elsewhere.
Do not cross the picket line, Warren said. Understand people on the picket line are not just fighting for their families. Theyre fighting for all our families. Theyre fighting for basic fairness and equality in this country.
On Thursday, the unions representing 31,000 Stop & Shop workers across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut voted to go on strike. Their contract expired in February, and they have been unable to reach a deal on a new one.
...
Speaking to reporters, Warren reiterated the message that she has been campaigning on for years, that the wealthy are taking advantage of the working class. This is the problem all across this country is that those at the top think that they can just keep sucking out every bit of profit and leave nothing for the working people, the people who actually get out there and make it happen every day, Warren said.
What people are asking for here is theyre just asking for fair wages, theyre asking for health care benefits and just as shot at a decent retirement, she said.
With any luck they can make ‘Stop-N-Shop’ go the way of A&P
, and the union slugs that worked there can be homeless.
harf!!
I was in a Big Y yesterday. The people there said the union goons at S&S basically kicked all the customers out at 4 pm. Didnt matter that they were buying food for their kids.
When I lived in Massghaistan, Stop&Shop opened a delivery service called Pea Pod. People referred to that service quite correctly as Stop&Pea on the corner.
When I was a kid I knew a number of older ladies who had been homemakers during Pittsburgh’s big union days in the 40’s and 50’s. To a one they all seemed to agree that whenever their husbands were called out on strike the family never did make up the economic ground they had lost during that period of being without a paycheck.
Stop and Shop operates in a highly competitive New England market with very low margins.
Consumers would be hurt if they had to close stores or went out of business.
If they raise prices consumers won’t stop and shop.
LOL. Last Place Lizzie is trying really really hard to catch fire. Next thing you know, she’ll be taking a swing at anyone who crosses the picket line and calling them “filthy scabs.”
Eastern Airlines!
I shop at Stop-N-Shop a lot, and I have had no problem with the employees. I don't wish them ill. That said, in a very competitive business such as groceries, I doubt that many of their demands will be satisfied.
if a person wants ‘fair’ wages and health benefits, they should put on their interview shoes and go get it. Bump themselves up from an entry-level job, which mini-marts are, instead of staying at an entry-level job and demanding the moon. Or, they could spend their work-time upselling to the customers, so the store is more profitable allowing the owner to provide more perks, instead of acting like customers are interrupting their day.
I’d cross that picket line, repeatedly, just to spite the old hag.
Maybe they can replace them with illegals. Democrats LOVE illegals.
Seems that point is lost on most progressives. Yet, S&S gives employees medical benefits and pensions. What the frick else do they want for stocking shelves, pushing cash register buttons and making change, and presumably serving food? A monkey could do those jobs. [no offense to monkeys]
She might get a better response if she relieved her refrigerator of all that beer.
I’m going tomorrow!
It's a large supermarket chain.I'm not sure exactly how big but I think they pretty much cover the Northeast.
A&P used to be by far the largest grocery store in the world, until unions drove them out of business.
Many, many, moons ago I walked a picket line with Cesar Chavez in front of the last A&P in town. They were out of business and closed within a year. All the jobs were gone.
All unions should be outlawed and their leaders imprisoned!
Yep, loved A & P. Grandparents used to take me. Fond memories.
MB is non-union as I recall. IMHO, she is pandering to the Unions who most likely have donated to her campaigns. Make the members feel like she cares about them than collect a campaign check from their dues, while they are out not getting paid.
Pickett lines are for disrupting the business and should be crossed.
To hell with union picketers. Fire every last one of them.
They live in an anachronism, a non right to work state.
