Union College president David R. Harris penned an op-ed, entitled, “A Campus Is Not the Place for Free Speech,” in which he argues that it is the role of colleges and universities to filter the conversations on campuses to provide “constructive engagement.”

“I oppose free speech on college campuses.” Why would a college president, especially one who has not already announced his retirement, make such a statement? It is not because I think college campuses should be safe havens from voices on the left and right that violate what I have learned and what I believe. My opposition is just as strong when it comes to free speech arguments in support of voices that affirm my beliefs.

This, about to be ex college President, is full of it, but I believe you misread his original statement.

In clicking through from The Breitbart article to the original article I find in the comments section a 3rd generation Union alum who states that he’s given to Union for the last time. Thus a response from President Harris asking for him to reach out and talk. Harris had no reaction to any of other measured, reasoned and considerate comments, most of which called him out.

Heh, Lord knows I can misinterpret, but from the article, I read it as as his version of what he understands free speech to be is violated (probably by voices from the right, though he couldn’t get away with saying it that way) and that is a bad thing

I wish I had the ability to search for Mr. Harris’s school record and see where he was during the 70”s. I wonder what kind of speech he was involved in during his college days, and if there are any comments from him on free speech back then.
