House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal is prepared to issue a subpoena for President Donald Trump’s tax returns if the administration refuses to turn them over, an aide said Thursday.
In a letter to IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig on Wednesday, Neal (D-Mass.) demanded that by next week Rettig hand over six years’ worth of Trump’s personal tax returns and those of some of his businesses. But Trump left little doubt that he would resist the effort, repeating claims that he is being audited by the IRS.
The fight could escalate into a court battle, but Neal wouldn’t discuss that possibility.

This is a fishing expedition.
if they get the tax returns, they will look for tax matters which the public doesn’t really understand, such as capital gains tax rates, or capital loss carryforwards, or depreciation, and claim that Trump doesn’t pay his “fair share” of taxes.
They can make political statements all day long, but, I bet that Trump is complying with all tax laws, and thus, is paying his fair share based on paying what the law requires in his circumstances.
Isn’t it a fact, legally speaking, that there needs to be probable cause of some crime, for anyone in law enforcement to get copies of someone’s tax returns?
I know Congress is not a branch of law enforcement, however, it stinks that they want to subpoena these tax returns, without having any probable cause of anything. They want a fishing expedition.
