Starting this week, companies are now required to charge you if you live in California.
If you order something online from merchants with a brick-and-mortar store in California like Target or Kohls, consumers pay California sales tax. But buying something online from stores that dont have an actual store in California, until now, didnt charge a sales tax.
California has now closed that loophole.
The state law changed on April 1. Now, it doesnt matter if an out-of-state company has a real store in California or not, online transactions

Texas is looking at the same thing.
what if you order by snail mail or phone from a catalog?
For hundreds of years that’s been untaxed.
Amongst the highest income tax states in the nation...
Amongst the highest sales tax states in the nation...
Amongst the highest gasoline tax states in the nation...
It’s eyeing our highways to charge more fees now with miles driven in mind, even though it’s already targeted vehicle owners with registration fees, sales taxes on vehicle purchases, and driver’s license fees.
California just can’t collect enough to satisfy it’s insatiable thirst for spending.
They also have taxes on you if you leave...
Yeah I noticed. My cigars are $4.00 more per order. It’s not going to get better.
I doubt I ever will, but you never know.
California just cant collect enough to satisfy its insatiable thirst for spending.
Solution: Raise taxes more
Since 1996 I paid Texas sales tax for my in state internet sales.
Lots of states going this way. I sell on Etsy and these state are going after the facilitators which would Be Etsy and even if you sell 1.00 to these states tax will be charged.
If you have your own website they have a threshold in sales like a 100K in sales to the state before you would have to pay any tax.
By having a facilitator tax they get money on every sale. I no way sell 100k worth of stuff not even 10K a year but my customers are taxed and the facilitator(Etsy) charges it and sends it to the State.
Oh they are...
Remember BayWatch..?
If you throw a football or frisbee on a public beach in L.A. County in a place not specifically marked and set aside for that purpose, the fine is $1,500.
If you dig a hole in the sand on those same beaches and the hold is deeper than 18 inches, it’s the same fine.
In many cities and towns you cannot BBQ on your porch or balcony. Of your HOUSE..? Yes.
Mn will probably get a 20 cent per gallon tax hike on gasoline, that will do wonders for our economy I’m sure.
I think online retailers will start to refuse to sell in CA. the paperwork for them wont be worth it!!! I Ive in Ca. and do ALL my shopping on line I think I will start to have a lot less choices!!!
And just like that...my ebusiness does not sell in CA any more...prolly will shut down, too much risk -vs- reward.
This is I use my own custom shopping basket and credit card payment system that I wrote myself that goes directly to the Visa/MC and Amex processors.
DIY and you avoid all the ‘facilitator’ fees and state tax hits on small sales totals.
Closed that loophole? Is there a tariff border with California but we cannot have one with China?
This is total anarchy.
If you buy big items online, time to set up that UPS box at the border.... and then have UPS reroute the item to your house while in transit...
This is a violation of interstate commerce, akin to make a border tariff. I have no idea how they can get away with this under so called globalism.
Not sure why the buyer who owes the taxes is not required to pat it and not the seller who has no ties to the state.
BUT, that’s what is going to happen...ebay, poshmark, Amazon will add the required tax and remit it to the appropriate state.
I think I may look into that. I am small as I hand make all my items (hats) so I can only make so many items in a year.
At least for the moment The facilitators are actually do the collecting because it would be an accounting nightmare.
