The new minimum wage is killing NYC’s once-thriving restaurant scene

New York City restaurants are eliminating jobs, reducing employee hours and raising prices due to the higher costs of the $15/hour minimum wage.

A once-growing industry is contracting, according to an online survey conducted by the New York City Hospitality Alliance, an association representing restaurants in the city.

Last year, “full-service restaurants recorded a 1.6 percent job loss, which is the first recorded annual loss in two decades,” said Andrew Rigie, executive director of the trade group.

The survey also said about a third of respondents will eliminate jobs and most will raise prices this year because of the new $15-an-hour law backed by Gov. Cuomo and other state officials, which took effect on Dec. 31, 2018.

The governor, through a spokeswoman, defended state policies: “All New Yorkers deserve to make a living wage and under the governor’s leadership, more minimum-wage workers than ever before have received an increase in their wages. The fact is that increasing the minimum wage puts more money in the pockets of hardworking New Yorkers, which creates more demand for local businesses and increases economic activity.”

TPTB in NYC have every reason to try to drive the city’s economy into recession while PDJT is in office.

If 15 bucks an hour is a problem in high price Manhattan, what does it do in places like Buffalo and Syracuse?

“All New Yorkers deserve to make a living wage...”

I didn’t think a person could afford to live in a dumpster in NYC on a wage of $15/hr.

Another classic example of what happens when liberals get what they asked for. That’s why you don’t spend your life working minimum wage, moron. You’re 17 years old and have already hit your peak in life? That’s not society’s fault, loser.

The leftist just never learns the lesson of raising high the minimum wage results in less jobs and reduces small business opportunities. Also that leads to reduced revenues taken in via income taxes. Stupidity supreme.

No joke. For anybody that wants to live there all crammed together living like pigs and pay $3,000/month for the privilege, my answer is: Better you than me.

The government does not have the right to set a minimum hourly rate. It did and it failed so they will certainly call for a higher rate which will also fail.

It hasn’t done anything yet. Upstate will be phasing it in.

The thing is, $15/hr is not the ceiling...

Also, I would disagree with the implication that all jobs should support living on your own. Not every job is worth enough that someone could live off it. There have to be starter jobs, part time jobs, second jobs for people looking to pick up some extra cash. Not every job is a viable career choice.

If we ever win the lottery, I’d like to spend about a week in New York City playing tourist, then never go near the place again. Same with Washington DC.

IOW, while the minimum wage goes up to $15/hr, productivity does not increase to pay for some or all of it.

First time I visited NYC, back when I was a kid, we came across cops discovering a double homicide and later got back to our hotel room to find out it had been burgled.
