Dick’s Sporting Goods Lost Millions Over Anti-Gun Policies – Here’s How Much The Backlash Cost

Dick’s Sporting Goods took a loss of an estimated $150 million in sales last year after the company heavily restricted firearm purchases and began advocating for gun control.

The company made various policy changes after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, left 17 dead. It announced it would no longer sell modern sporting rifles or high-capacity magazines and increased the purchase age for all firearms to 21.

Dick’s also hired anti-gun lobbyists to promote gun restriction legislation, despite saying it still supports the Second Amendment.

“The system does not work,” said Edward Stack, Dick’s CEO. “It’s important that when you know there’s something that’s not working, and it’s to the detriment of the public, you have to stand up.”

My money goes elsewhere as well. They opened a store in Reno just before this nonsense. Hasn’t gone out of business yet but the few times I’ve seen the area, it appears empty. Almost like Target, not sure how they stay in business.

My family used to give me Dick's gift cards for occasions {birthday, Christmas etc} so I had several hundred dollars worth of Dick's cards when they announced this policy.

I went in, and purchased ammo {they had 38 and 357 rounds on sale for 50%}. I went to checkout and the clerk axed if I wanted to use my Dicks Loyalty Card for future purchases and I just turned my card into the cashier and told her to send it to the CEO and tell him I wouldn't be back.

I buy elsewhere, I did not go back.

Their annual sales in 2017 was $7.3 Billion. $150 million isn’t that big of a deal I wouldn’t think.

That's how much they lost on gun sales (so they say). What is missing is all the extra sales people buy while in the store for those hunting trips (e.g. coolers, tents, beef jerky, etc.). Based on Shack's statement that the "boycott has ended" and "we did the right thing", I suspect sales are down a lot more that we're led to believe.

I'd give them two-three years.

“Love is fleeting,” Stack said. “Hate is forever.”

The “love” of the buycott was fleeting, the “hate” of the boycott is forever.

They temporarily had the anti-gunners rewarding them for taking their anti-gun position, but that love affair ended quickly as REI already takes care of outdoor clothing “fashion” buyers. The utter disdain from the pro-2A crowd is set in for good, those buyers will not return.

A 2% decrease in sales because of one product is huge. Especially for brick and mortar stores, and especially when the product makes the store a destination for the customer.

(I would think a shopper would go a store to buy a hunting rifle and pick up other stuff aswell, like camping equipment, socks, gloves, etc. Few people have a favorite glove store and decide to buy a rifle while they are there.)

We’re lucky to have Cabela’s not too far from our neck of the woods. So much better. Unfortunately the Dick’s over in the next county is completely surrounded by hockey and soccer moms and will probably be able to survive.

I remember those times as well. We didn’t call out mentally ill, we just noted people as “ain’t right” and we looked after them and kept them out of trouble. Mother’s were the first line of defense, fathers when necessary. Police if all else failed, but back then it never came to that.

Just saw this in their numbers at CNBC:

"Shares of Dick's Sporting Goods have fallen more than 37 percent from a year ago."

They had negative same store sales. I worked at Wal-Mart’s corporate HQ for 5 years. They would get PISSED if same store sales growth wasn’t high enough. I can’t even imagine the fecal matter storm that would have resulted from declining same store sales.

Dicks managed to achieve this at a time when Target had its best quarter in 15 years and Wal-Mart had its best quarter in 12 years. There’s no way to spin this as anything but a disaster for Dicks. Its an ongoing one too. People like yours truly will never buy one single thing there ever again.

We have Cabelas, SportsmansWarehouse and Scheels as big chains here so we’re good to go. I don’t know (or care) how busy the local ‘dicks’ is. They don’t get any of my business from the first time they showed their rainbow colors.
