Lt. Gen. David Berger Nominated as Next Marine Corps Commandant

By: Sam LaGrone

This post has been updated to include the official annoucement from the Marine Corps.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A key architect of the Marine’s future fight in an era of great power competition was tapped Tuesday to be the next commandant of the Marine Corps, according to a Congressional notification.

Lt. Gen. David Berger, the current commander of Marine Corps Combat Development Command, is a career infantry officer with extensive Middle East and Western Pacific experience.

The nomination was first reported by Military.com.

Since taking over command of MCCDC in August, Berger has been refining Marine Corps’ emerging operational ideas, like the Expeditionary Advance Base Operations and Littoral Operations in a Contested Environment concepts, that hope to guide the service in future high-end conflict.

In his role, he has also pushed a modernization agenda for the Marine Corps.

“We can’t do the incremental change – we have to find new ways to operate, not just new ways of using the gear we have,” he said in September.

Prior to his current assignment, Berger had led I Marine Expeditionary Force in California and U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific since 2014.

In 2012 he took command in Afghanistan as the commander of the 1st Marine Division in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Then-Col. Berger also served in Iraq as the leader of Regimental Combat Team 8 in Fallujah.

Berger, a Tulane University graduate, commissioned in 1981 as an infantry officer. He also holds a graduate degree from Johns Hopkins University.

“His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon,” according to a Wednesday release from the Marine Corps.

If confirmed by the Senate, Berger will replace Gen. Robert Neller who has served as the Marine Corps commandant since 2015.

The following is the March 27, 2019 announcement from the Marine Corps on Lt. Gen. David Berger’s nomination.

President Trump Nominates Next Commandant of the Marine Corps

PENTAGON, Washington, D.C. — President Donald J. Trump has nominated Lt. Gen. David H. Berger to serve as the 38th commandant of the Marine Corps, Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan announced today. This appointment is pending Senate confirmation.

Lt. Gen. Berger is currently serving as Commanding General of Marine Corps Combat Development Command and Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration.

If confirmed Berger will relieve Gen. Robert B. Neller, who will retire following his relief and appointment ceremony after 44 years of service.

Since his commissioning in 1981, LtGen. Berger has served in multiple prestigious assignments including Director of Operations for the Department of Plans, Policies, and Operations, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps; Commanding General, 1st Marine Division (Forward) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM; Commanding General, I Marine Expeditionary Force; Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

He currently serves as the Commanding General, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, and the Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.

His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon

No. It’s not the same imbecile Marine commander who said guarding the border “takes away resources” or some stupid lib excuse.

You got it... His “leaked” internal memo to SecDef and SecNav said moving troops to the southern border would interfere and be costly to “training” missions overseas...

He is an Obama appointee...Time for him to go...

You guys are clowns. Gen Neller is correct. The Marine Corps is trying to rebuild it’s expeditionary identity after 18 years of fighting as a second land army. Training has suffered due to the Obama draw down and reduced budgets. Let the National Guard do the border mission, the Marine Corps needs to get back to it’s roots.

The Marine Corp, Coast Guard and Navy are the only United States military branches NOT covered by Posse Commitatus...

The new military budget by President Trump gives the Corps plenty of money for the training...

The Obama appointee just wanted to throw a dig at the president before his retirement as thanks to Obama for the job...

This has nothing to do with Posse Commitatus, it has to do with the fact that these units need to be training, not playing support bitch to the Border Patrol. Gen Neller has addressed the training issues by expanding ITX in Twentynine Palms and WTI in Yuma. Both are now set up so they overlap and units now participate in both exercises at the same time. The Corps is returning to our amphibious roots and we need more time at sea. Can’t do this with bodies playing Firewatch at the border. Again, the National Guard is more suited for this mission.

In the old corps it was do what you are F-ing ordered, with force and enthusiasm. He had no business arguing in public. Neller has to go.
Besides, he has been a silent little bitch about women, trannies and homos in the grunts and even being platoon commanders.

What the hell was he supposed to say when asked in a Congressional hearing? Neller stood by the Corps study in 2016 that proved women shouldn’t serve in combat arms MOS’s. The SecNav told him to do it anyway. What was that about doing what the F@#K you’re ordered to do again? Neller has been a great Commandant, anyone saying less is full of crap.

Since the rise of medalflation since WW2 it’s hard to take citations seriously. Did this guy get a combat ribbon from real combat or from flying over an engagement in a helicopter? The USMC has plenty of pogues. I hope this guy wasn’t one.

He ran a Combat Team in Falluja. You may remember that little dust up.

You’re quite right. Marines are built to kill people and break things, not babysitting. Until shoot to kill orders are issued the Corps needs to do what it was built to do.

Semper Fi.

I shouldn’t call him “Dave”, but he was our neighbor awhile back and is still a friend.

WAY TO GO, DAVE!!!

I think he will be an excellent Commandant.

And it’s so nice to see the thanks POTUS from disloyal Generals for fixing the Obama budget issues. He’s been stabbed in the back time and again by the Marines “serving” him.
