President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to promote free speech on college campuses by threatening colleges with the loss of federal research funding if they do not protect those rights.
"We’re here to take historic action to defend American students and American values," Trump said, surrounded by conservative student activists at the signing ceremony. "They’ve been under siege."
"Under the guise of speech codes, safe spaces and trigger warnings, these universities have tried to restrict free thought, impose total conformity and shut down the voices of great young Americans like those here today," he said.
A senior administration official said the order directs 12 grant-making agencies to use their authority in coordination with the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to ensure institutions that receive federal research or education grants promote free speech and free inquiry. White House officials say it will apply to more than $35 billion in grants.
Public universities seeking funding would have to certify that they comply with the First Amendment, which already applies to them. Private universities, which have more flexibility in limiting speech, would need to commit to their own institutional rules.
"Even as universities have received billions and billions of dollars from taxpayers, many have become increasingly hostile to free speech and the First Amendment," Trump said.
Trump had announced that such an order was forthcoming at the Conservative Political Action Conference last month, where he said the directive would require colleges and universities to support free speech in exchange for federal research dollars.

I thought I heard a snippet somewhere that he also plans to require universities to show what kind of jobs/pay graduates in different departments get. Maybe I was dreaming this.

That would be GREAT. Then kids would be able to see how previous students in their disciplines have fared job-wise. This would probably dissuade at least some people from going after useless degrees (and going deep into debt to do so).

Trump is blowing the whistle at many a point of absurdity created by our incumbent politics.
To do that, he is using a hide thicker than a rhinoceros’s. It is so clear that Trump believes in the vision that he received, and isn’t sweating the quibbles when the large things are falling well in place. Fine tuning the little things is what Mike Pence might be good for.
The “left” (which by and large is illiberal, not liberal) will destroy itself by bringing on its own shunning in comparison to Trump successes.

It is as large as God and needs a faith as strong as God. The more Donald Trump keeps up, the more his vision looks like one created by God, for He won’t recommend anything other than what holy scripture promises.
There’s such a thing as learning through both revelation and experience. Universities today offer a smorgasbord of hokum and profitable things. People who understand will dine on the good things at the smorgasbord and turn down the bad things. The preacher at my church refers to “Oh! I could have had a V-8!” moments.
I recall that one of the issues that the “Occupy Wall Street” kids complained about was that they had spent so much on a college education but could not find a job. Of course, they blamed Wall Street’s “one percenters” instead of the colleges that didn’t bother counseling them that academically easy majors in “studies” aren’t worth the paper their diplomas are printed on.
While the responsibility to check whether one’s field of study is likely to pay off ultimately falls on the student, I also realize that many students going to college are not likely to do such analysis of their majors. So it is a good thing for Trump to require colleges to at least make such information available.

I saw something odd yesterday, an announcement that Fox News is merging with Walt Disney.
Who is going to pull on whom, and how? In an era when God is worshiped more and more, truth and old fashioned innocent values will come to the fore. Disney has had a lot of taint, but it still has family friendly themes too, which it dare not abandon lest it lose most of its revenue stream.
Something new may be being brought on the MSM scene through the most unexpected of events.
