In his first month in office, Attorney General William Barr has sent a reassuring message to the beleaguered Justice Department -- he wants a return to basics after years of disruptive firings, tweet storms and scandals.
In briefings, Barr has asked detailed questions about cases, suspects and legal arguments. He has wandered his fifth-floor hallway to converse about the law.
Advisers and associates said the approach reflects Barr's low-key persona, and his top goals of steering the Justice Department out of the line of political fire, boosting public confidence in it, and improving the morale of its 110,000 employees.
"Everything the attorney general is doing right now is about restoring the (department's) reputation as a nonpartisan institution whose only allegiance is the law and to the rule of law, not politics," said J. Michael Luttig, a former federal judge and close friend.
Barr could soon face the toughest test of his tenure. Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III is expected to release his final report in coming weeks, and Barr must decide how much to release to the public.
He has told associates he took the job because the Justice Department faced a critical juncture.
"He reveres the Justice Department as an institution," said Jonathan Turley, a professor at George Washington University Law School and a friend. "To understand Bill Barr is to understand he has come to the Justice Department with a mission and it is to entirely benefit the institution, not any individuals."
Barr is particularly concerned that politics may have influenced several high-profile investigations.

Well this doesn’t say he’s fired 80% of them, so I’ll just wait on that feeling of confidence.
“One of his first addresses, they said, will advocate for restricting the ability of federal judges to issue nationwide injunctions halting administration policies.”
I’d really like to know how he’s going to do that! Aside from getting the trash out of the DOJ and FBI, this is probably the most important task he could take on. One thing is sure, he’s not going to get any help from the SCOTUS here. They are too busy out trying to figure out how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
He won’t even try. He’s just like the rest of them.
Sessions seemed to be a great appointment in the beginning but turned into a great disappointment. We’ll see about Barr. I’m not going to hold my breath.
I agree. We’ll see.
We were lied to about Mueller.
Our media is about 90% crap.
Dear General Barr,
It is going to take quite a while and more than just lip service for this law abiding citizen to regain any faith in the Department of Justice and the FBI.
execute hillary and Obama for their coup attempt and everything else will fall in line.
Ya think?
there seems to be more people off the reservation than on the reservation.
The best way to restore confidence in the Justice Department is to herd a bunch of the well-known malefactors into jail.
And mueller is still having doors broken down in the middle of the night.
I wonder if there was the internet in 1930s Germany, would people be typing like we are while the constitution gets eroded and people’s homes are ransacked without good reason?
Of course there are some big differences between 1930s nazi Germany and 2019 America.
For now.
IF IT WERE A PRIVATE COMPANY THE BOTTOM LINE WOULD BE THE BOTTOM LINE. GOVERNMENT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY. Sorry for the caps-forgot.
I have no doubt that he wants to improve the public’s perception of the DOJ and the morale of the employees.
Improving their morals will be required to convince this citizen they aren’t just as criminal as the people they are prosecuting.
Just to rehash;
The state of Massachusetts had a embargo (ban) of flights and sea traffic from Portugal back in the 70' & 80's.
This was a attempt to stop the invasion of illegals from Portugal that the state was plagued with.
You’re right, Barr arrived to find the DOJ tied up, blind folded and raped. Those left were basically the criminals. Only one way to solve the problem!
That deserves repeating. So if you don't mind me borrowing your words:
Tell Mulehead he has one week to finish his witch hunt. Then indict Comey. McCabe, Rosenstein, Ohr, Struck, Page, Yates, Brennen, and Clapper. And release FISA documents--and that is just a start.
Verify BEFORE Trust.
I will never have confidence or trust in my government again. Not any part of it.
There is nothing that can be done.
If you are my in government, and your name is not President Donald J. Trump, then we are now forever at odds.
