Bernie Sanders aide defends Omar with term seen as anti-Semitic, apologizes

A top staffer to Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign apologized Tuesday for invoking “a dual allegiance” of Jewish Americans while defending Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.

Belén Sisa, Sanders’ national deputy press secretary, was discussing the term seen as anti-Semitic in a Facebook thread over the weekend -- and argued that questioning it was legitimate, Politico reported.

“This is a serious question: do you not think that the American government and American Jewish community has a dual allegiance to the state of Israel? I’m asking not to rule out the history of this issue, but in the context in which this was said by Ilhan,” Sisa wrote.

No. The Souths decision to go to war to preserve slavery ruined it’s economy. They started a war they couldn’t hope to win. And why do so many so called conservatives venerate a bunch of Southern Democrats?

Another Lost causer. The leaders of the Confederacy were Democrats. Tell me they weren’t. I’ll wait for as long as it takes.

So IOW's you just talk out of your smelly obamahole. That's exactly the response I expected.

Read the history of the Confederacy. They were Democrats.

I'll wait for as long as it takes.

Thanks for conceding the argument.

You thank me for conceding, which of course I have not done, an argument which neither I nor any other reader of this thread can understand from your replies.

Yes you did in the most cowardly way. I asked you a couple of simple questions. What would America be like if the South had won the war and what would be look as as a nation today. Simple enough. here’s another one for you. A popular trope of people like you is to say slavery was dying. Why then did the South go to war to preserve it? And further, if the South had won the war would it have freed the slaves?

When Pat Buchanan questioned the wisdom of America's attachment to Israel

What's the difference between Israel and Rhodesia, South Africa, Nationalist China, Franco, Papadopoulos, Stroessner, Salazar, and Pinochet?

Seriously, what is the deal with you people???

Buchanan was attacked from both sides, my point has to do with why is it illegitimate, or worse -anti-Semitic, to question the wisdom of America's support for Israel?

Um . . . the same reason it was "un-American" to oppose Rhodesia???

If there was any difference between the Communist world's attitude towards Rhodesia and its attitude towards Israel, perhaps you will enlighten me.

In both cases, they were Americans from Germany or Japan.
The vast majority of American Jews did not come from Israel.

All the reasons you cite are good and true. There are other countervailing considerations, such as our support potentially commits us to conflict, perhaps thermonuclear existential conflict, with hundreds of millions of Arabs and 1.5 billion Muslims who control much of the world's oil reserves. Even though we no longer seem to need that oil, the supply and price of oil is vital to American interests and allies.

Seriously . . . have you ever read the Bible?

Jefferson gave the Constitution.

Jefferson had nothing to do with the Constitution. He was in France at the time, I believe.

They’re Confederates posing as conservative Republicans. I have an ancestor who served in the Union Army fighting their ancestors.

Jefferson was in Paris before the Constitutional Convention. He kept in correspondence with Madison as it was being drafted.

Let's clear out some of the underbrush.

I do not believe for a moment that the objections of this Congresswoman to our relationship with Israel is motivated by anything other than base motives. But I do not believe that unless we have actual proof that she should be shut down unless those base motives can be explicitly demonstrated and then she should not be shut down but she should be discredited.

Now to proceed to the main point.

My belief is that it is legitimate inquiry to ask whether the national interests of the United States are best served by our commitment to Israel, why cannot we inquire, consider and debate?

It seems to me that to question the loyalty of Jews who support Israel is legitimate but less so. We have questioned the loyalty of Germans, Japanese, Irish and Tories in our early postcolonial days. The practice is unseemly but anyway part of our history. It is unseemly but it is not ipso facto proof of Semitic bigotry.

In my reply #36 I agreed with the reasons for supporting Israel and even added what I believe to be a major reason to support Israel. That does not mean that I think we should forbid any discussion about whether it is wise to expose America to nuclear attack for our support of Israel. Is Israel worth being blown up? This question should be weighed against the probabilities of a nuclear Armageddon because we support Israel-as in all matters we must weigh the pros and cons.

As unseemly as the question might be concerning divided loyalties, I do not believe that it is so illegitimate as to shut down speech.
