Gov. Gavin Newsom is putting a moratorium on the death penalty in California, sparing the lives of more than 700 death-row inmates.
Newsom plans to sign an executive order Wednesday morning granting reprieves to all 737 Californians awaiting executions a quarter of the countrys death row inmates.
His action comes three years after California voters rejected an initiative to end the death penalty, instead passing a measure to speed up executions.
Newsom says the death penalty system has discriminated against mentally ill defendants and people of color. It has not made the state safer and has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars, according to prepared remarks Newsom plans to deliver Wednesday morning when he signs the order.

and mentally ill people of color have practically no chance at all.
2006 was the last one. The whole thing in the 1990s began to slow down.
In other words, the death penalty eliminates Democrats.
California’s incestuous history to share with everyone!

737 people formed a “Friends of Newsome” anti-death penalty committee. Interesting that their headquarters was at some place called San Quentin, Cal.
When CT eliminated the death penalty, the majority of people supported it bit the Dems in Hartford hated it and eventually repealed it, allowing Steven J. Hayes and Joshua A. Komisarjevsky, who in 2007 followed a women home, raped and murdered her and her two daughters and beat her husband and tied him up in the basement and lit the house on fire with them inside. Only the husband survived.
“This is how you put California in play. “
The more radical they get, the more they will lose in 2020.
And then, Gayvin will register them to vote as Democrats (sigh) . . .
Nearly 60% rejected removing the death penalty, 56% voted to strip appeals and fast track the carrying out of the sentences.
Newsom, you wanted to put California in play? This is how you put California in play.
Unfortunately, I doubt Newsom has anything to fear now that the CA Democrat machine has ballot harvesting in their arsenal.
“The last capital execution took place on Jan. 17, 2006.”
“Only 13 executions have been carried out since 1978, when the death penalty was reinstated in California.”
I got to know an incredible, man who was a psychiatrist, in 1977. He served as a pysch in the trials and sentencing of many horrible California killers.
He warned us, when California reinstated the death penalty, a killer on death row for any lawyer or law firm was like winning a multi million $ life time lottery until the killer died of natural causes decades later.
He probably under estimated the actual costs.
These 700 + killers have cost us as taxpayers millions of $’s in lawyer fees each year and zero justice.
The voters of California supported the death penalty less than three years ago. Not that it matters to people like Newsom.
They want the criminals on the streets it’s the Democrats new Army.
The left will next get rid of life sentences. Just wait.
They were never serious about the death penalty. Chuck Manson and others have died of old age in the slammer.
Our liberal judges allowed the attorneys to pull all sorts of nonsense.
Most of those cases should have been shut down.
Some of the defenses were in real terms simply an attack on the judicial system, nothing more than contempt of court.
Judges don’t do it very often, but >IMO< you start jailing defense attorneys who are abusing the system.
Until we get serious about that, these ambulance chasers will rule the roost.
Look the dems and uniparty leaders are saying executive orders are unconstitutional because they are legislative powers.
if so then they are to be rejected by all executive branch officers, not just republicans.
Well, they will for minorities and women.
They already sentence women on average to 2/3 less time for equal or greater crimes than a man receives.
So 737 convicted murderers are going to be given a reprieve, and allowed to be supported for the rest of their lives by the taxpayers of California. That is, unless these convicts sentences are commuted to a status whereby they will be eligible for parole at some point in their lives. Does a life sentence in California actually mean life? Somehow I doubt it. Newsom just turned the whole Correctional system in California into a sanctuary system. He claims the death penalty hasn’t made the state safer. Well buddy, it won’t, until you stop letting more murderers in from across the border.
