President Trump on overengineering/uneeded complexity (Boeing 737-8 related)
Twitter ^ | 03/12/2019 | President Donald J Trump

Posted on 03/12/2019 12:52:10 PM PDT by Simon Foxx

Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better. Split second decisions are........needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot. I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!

We know why the first one went down.

Why did the first plane go down? I haven't heard a definitive answer yet.

You would be ok if you have the replacement blades... lol

That is crazy though... We are going too far with technology when we could get killed by wiper blades. At some point we need to just draw a line and say enough is enough. too many external influences that can affect this technology.

The whole concept of self driving cars is a good place to start. This is the same technology concept in these aircraft.

You get the right linux and you will be happy you did and never want to look back. I did and now realize I should have done it a lot sooner.

Very good description of MCAS;
https://theaircurrent.com/aviation-safety/what-is-the-boeing-737-max-maneuvering-characteristics-augmentation-system-mcas-jt610/

Boeing says pilots can easily override the system, and it’s covered in the manual. The pilots that previously flew the Lion Air accident aircraft did disable the MCAS system and made their flight safely. The accident pilots didn’t. It seems to be a training/awareness problem. We don’t yet know if MCAS was the cause of the most recent accident.

Also witnesses said the Ethiopian plane was was trailing smoke and debris before it crashed;

“safeties in the software refuse to let him”

Much like the damn “traction control off” that still limits wheel spin on these new 4x4 trucks and won’t let me power out of a sticky situation like the older trucks. Want to turn off the traction control and fishtail in the rain or snow? Forget about it!!

The 737Max only has fly-by-wire spoilers. All of the other flight controls operate classically.

Blame it on increased memory.

It is my considered opinion that the team who engineered a car (or anything else) should get the first dozen that roll off the assembly line, and have to do a randomly selected failure repair on them.

"Even after you was your hands you reach out touch the dirty handles to turn the water off."

Which is why you use your elbows (with the right style shutoff valve), or tear off some hand dryer paper, dry hands, and THEN turn the water off.

“Waiting until the cause of the crash is known before speaking would be a good idea.”

Because a 3rd group of passengers slammed to the ground in a fiery explosion would not bother you at all. Would it?

Trump has this 100% right. No matter what caused this crash. His statement is common sense for anyone who has a clue.

Okay, but would it do any good to point out that the Max isn’t a fly-by-wire plane, and that the 737 dates back to the mid 1960s?

Only the spoilers are FBW on the Max. Everything else operates conventionally.

Computers can, in fact, milk a few more percent of efficiency out of many things. But they can also make equipment difficult to deal with in out-of-the-ordinary situations. The market should be allowed to figure out what it wants here.

It’s possible for even Donald Trump to go off half-cocked.

I mean just imagine in the case of the first crash 5 months ago. The plane is flying through the air smoothly and every thing is fine. An instant later the plane is nose diving to the ground because some sensor told the computer that the air speed was suddenly Zero. The computer now thinks that the plane needs to recover from a stall. Can you imagine what it would be like as a pilot to experience that? The cockpit is not level. There are sudden G forces. Heck the pilot may not even have been strapped in at that moment. But they are suppose to work against all the forces, and understand instantly that the computer is crashing the plane. And in all of that they need to be able to disable the computer and recover the diving plane. And if they were already close to the ground then they may only have seconds to react. And Boeing blames it on improper training. Hogwash.

Not being a pilot or having intimate info on the plane then I cannot comment on all of the specifics of the information that you have given. But I can say that your conclusions are obviously wrong. Since it has been reported that the official cause of the first crash was an air speed sensor(Reading zero Airspeed) that caused the computer to dive the plane into the ground in an attempt to recover from what was perceived to be a stall. So you cannot even say that the computer does not have enough control to cause that.

Vendome, Ford merely applied forward their ingenuous Dealer-Requirement for headlight repair from 2000s F150s. Twenty-Five bucks will get you a new headlight, plus 2 hours service time.

WW: how many products do we use daily, especially computer hardware and software, where it is BEYOND CLEAR that the geniuses who created them never a day or a minute used them?

I run an academic support service that helps kids figure out what's going on at school. If their teachers would for a second consider the perspective of their students and parents, they would NEVER do the things they do. Instead they just pump out ridiculous lessons, grades, and assignments that make no sense to anyone but themselves.
