As an aside to all:
Ash Wednesday is celebrated to one extent or another by most Western Christian Denominations. I have been to Ash Wednesday celebrations in Presbyterian Churches, Anglican Churches and Roman Catholic Churches. While having been to a number of Eastern Christian denominations on various holidays and services, I am not familiar which of the Churches of the Eastern traditions use this as a “start of Lenten observances” and which do not.
Roman Catholic Churches are very uniform in celebrating this service but I don’t believe it is even rated as a “Holy Day of Obligation” in the Roman Catholic denominations.
It is NOT a "Holy Day of Obligation" (requiring Mass attendance) but it IS a day of "fasting and abstinence" (one small meal and two 'collations' and NO meat).
Also observed by most Lutherans.
At the time, that was CONGRESS, not the states.
The states could do as they wished.

It is a little bit spooky that I got a post only a few hours after thinking of sending you a mail.
I don’t recall having sent you a mail out of nowhere before but perhaps I have.
I guess coincidences happen in life :)
