Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is proposing what some opponents are calling a draconian gas tax increase to fix the states crumbling road infrastructure.
Whitmers budget proposal will include a 45-cent gas tax increase, which would be phased in over three separate intervals, the governors spokeswoman Tiffany Brown told reporters Monday. The rate would begin increasing in October, hit its second phase in April 2020, and ease into its final phase by the end of that year.
The increase is expected to generate roughly $2 billion a year in additional revenue for roads, according to media reports. Whitmer, a Democrat who ran on fixing Michigans roads, will present her idea to lawmakers Tuesday during a joint meeting of the House and Senate appropriations committees.
Whitmers plan would make Michigans one of the highest fuel tax rates in the country, behind the likes of California and Pennsylvania. Michigan motorists currently pay 26.3 cents per gallon. Total at-pump costs in the state are already the sixth-highest in the nation, in part because Michigan applies its 6 percent sales tax to fuel purchases.
Michigan Republicans have mixed feelings about such an increase.
Michigan Republican Party Chair Laura Cox panned the idea, saying in a statement that residents deserve real solutions on this critical issue, not a tax and spend solution which places the burden on the states overtaxed families.
Others are more supportive.
But I guess she can't because it's the principle of the thing. Whatever principle that would be.
...to fix the states crumbling road infrastructure....
Heres how this scam works: the above statement will be true. But the state will fund roads less from its other funds in proportion and spend the money elsewhere.
The lottery also works this way. True, they may spend 100 percent of it on education (which is mostly throwing good money after bad anyway, but thats another story). Then they contribute less from other funds to more important things.
Those Wolverines just can’t get enough of taxation.
Typical LIB lunatic . ..ugly inside .
check the roads in NY, California, Boston etc where taxes are highest- they are crap- terrible roads- where did the gas tax money go to? Certainly not all of it went to fixing the roads
This fat *itch is going to crush tourism and bankrupt the state!
Grandmole part2 is too stupid to anything but tax-n-spend.
“check the roads in NY, California, Boston etc where taxes are highest- they are crap- terrible roads- “
Boston doesn’t have bad roads.
.
You should have showed the pic that had her fat belly , complete with belly button, from the front.
I noticed you’re impressed with her intellectual assets as well.
??? Unless things have changed recently- they are pretty bad on back roads- especially in winter- I’m not talking turnpikes- and i should have said Massachusetts, not just Boston
She looks like ‘Monica’s’ much older, much fatter, sister. All that missing is the stain on that blue dress.
Massachusetts I’ll agree——singling out Boston made no sense. City roads take a real beating, especially in a geographically small city like Boston.
.
Look at Ct also. New Rat Gov proposing tolls everywhere from what I hear.
Democrats NEVER LEARN. Thought that the ruin of Detroit by Communist Party member Coleman Young (along with other Reds on the City Council, esp. Mahaffey and Henderson), would have taught the state a lesson about Marxist economics. BUT NOOOOO!
These same Dem aholes still want to totally destroy the state and the auto industry. They just handed the Republicans one of the best anti-Dem 2020 campaign issues of all times. Hope the GOPers take the issue by the balls and run with it till the end of time.
Ha ha. Must be trying to outdo democrat presidential candidate Jay Inslee who is trying this in Washington State.
Governor Whitmer has proposed offsetting this tax with a deduction on the State income tax. A large part of Michigan’s economy is tourism. As a rule, tourists pay the state income tax in the state where they live. They are not likely to come here, but rather spend their money elsewhere.
Tax and line the pockets of themselves and their friend’s leftists.
JoMa
Sorry, but once the full 45 cent increase goes into effect, Michigan will leap into the lead, but Kalifornica is increasing their tax this summer, so poor old Pennsylvania will drop to no. 3. I hope governor Wolf acts quickly to correct that insult.
Michigan's current tax is 44.1 cents, add 45 cents to that and you have an eye-popping 89.1 cents per gallon!
For roads.......what a joke.
Yes, that's the same intellectual asset that has propelled AOC into the leadership of the DemocRat party.
