The American Civil Liberties Union dealt a blow Monday to Democrats new election overhaul legislation, saying the bill does too much damage to the First Amendment and the storied rights group cannot support it.
ACLU officials said they support parts of the bill, such as making it easier to register to vote, but said the legislation attempts to control even the mere mention of a politician, which goes too far.
They will have the effect of harming our public discourse by silencing necessary voices that would otherwise speak out about the public issues of the day, the ACLUs national political director and senior legislative counsel wrote in a 13-page letter announcing opposition.
Democrats plan to put the bill, H.R. 1, on the chamber floor for a vote later this week.

Something is up with this, because the ACLU is NEVER concerned with something being anti-Constitutional.
With them it’s only a matter of if it is Leftist enough.
There’s something else driving this > IMO.
The Constitution gives the states total control over how electors are appointed. They could have lotteries should they wish.
But that doesn’t answer the question I have: how can an “elector” in Pennsylvania say to Pennsylvanians that “..it doesn’t matter if more of you voted to elect a Republican; the Democrat got higher votes in other states (of course, I as a Pennsylvania elector have no idea if the “popular vote count” is accurate from other states), and I also have no idea how I can verify that vote count from other states - but I need to adhere to that because all of your votes are now just my vote. Your voting really doesn’t matter. Only the people in really populous states matter, so I’m going with them”.
How is that not a nullification of every voter in the state??
The Citizens United case supposedly helped the R party because of big money from corporations. I wonder if it still works against Dems today. Look how rich and powerful Google, Amazon, etc. are today. Maybe they don’t want Citizens United to go away.
Isn’t that the truth.
Sec. 1402. RIGHTS OF CITIZENSThis is nationwide enfranchisement of all convicted felons who are not actually incarcerated, including those still on probation or on parole.
The right of an individual who is a citizen of the United States to vote in any election for Federal office shall not be denied or abridged because that individual has been convicted of a criminal offense unless such individual is serving a felony sentence in a correctional institution or facility at the time of the election.
Good grief! The criminal class is truly now the class of criminals.
I agree. Something is up.
I’m not sure how any votes are “nullified.” Under the Constitution, the only people who get to vote for President are the electors. While presidential candidates may appear on your ballot, you are voting for a slate of electors who may or may not be purportedly bound to vote for that particular candidate. You don’t have a vote for president that can be “nullified.”
In early Presidential elections, the presidential candidates’ names did not even appear on the ballot, if there was any sort of popular vote at all. Electors were appointed by the state legislature in several states. State legislatures could go back to that today if they wanted to. Or, as arrogantsob said, they could choose electors by lottery or any other way they wish.
Some states’ laws purport to bind electors to vote for a particular candidate. But it is not at all clear whether those laws are enforceable under the Constitution. Of course, it is also unclear whether a law binding an elector to vote for the “national popular vote” winner would be enforceable. What would stop one of those Pennsylvania electors from ignoring the Pennsylvania law and just voting for whoever he wants to?
On September 6, 2017, the nations largest social media platform disclosed that between June 2015 and May 2017, Russian entities purchased $100,000 in political advertisements, publishing roughly 3,000 ads linked to fake accounts associated with the Internet Research Agency, a pro-Kremlin organization. According to the company, the ads purchased focused on amplifying divisive social and political messages . . ..
“:^)
That’s the main reason I’m against certain ideas for legislation today.
We back putting stuff in place the next Leftist administration will kick our asses with.
Exactly.
If the electors are that empowered and can vote for whomever they want, then I don’t understand why citizens even bother to vote. If an elector can cast a ballot for anyone other than that state’s voters vote for, what’s the point of election for the office of president?
Yeah. If the ACLU is against it. You know it is really bad.
That is right.
The “popular vote” is a fiction and does not even bind an elector so there is no nullification.
Thanks Freedom'sWorthIt.
Curiosity? What would you suggest?
There’s nothing TO suggest.
The whole of gov’t. is a scam that cares not one whit for the wants and needs of American taxpaying citizens.
We see grandstanding by congresscritters but NEVER the results that will help set things right or punish the criminals.
The obstacles being thrown to thwart President Trump prove that the political class is interested ONLY in its own benefit and self preservation.
POLITICIAN....the only four letter word spelled with ten letters.
There is no political solution to what ails this nation...we are too far beyond that.
